French President Emmanuel Macron makes mask-wearing an act of national pride

PARIS – With a face mask 100 per cent made in France, President Emmanuel Macron showed the famously fashionable French people Tuesday that civic responsibility and style are not mutually exclusive.

Macron used a visit to a primary school to promote the type of cloth masks that will be de rigueur on public transportation and other locations when France starts emerging from its coronavirus lockdown next week.

The dark blue version Macron wore while visiting the school west of Paris complemented his tie and blue suit, and came embellished on one side with ribbon detail in red, white and blue, the colours of the French flag.

The French presidency said the mask, designed specifically to protect the public from the virus, was produced by knitwear manufacturer Chanteclair and retails for 4.92 euros ($7.50) The French military tested the garment’s breathability and effectiveness in filtering out small particles, the presidency said.

While some world leaders have been worried about the optics of being seen while masked, Macron previously appeared at public events in surgical masks, both thin ones and heavier-strength models.

Meanwhile, Trump doesn’t wear mask at mask factory.

Trump Planning on Winding Down Coronavirus Task Force

Breaking from the NY Times:

Cases are growing by 2 to 4 percent daily, and more than 1,000 people have died each day for over a month. At least 15 children in New York were hospitalized with an illness scientists worry might be linked to Covid-19.

Trump administration officials are telling members of the coronavirus task force that the White House plans to wind down the operation and it’s not clear whether any other group might replace it.

Blue-state coronavirus bailouts are unfair to Republicans, Trump says

Can you imagine the news this would have made if Obama had said this about red states?

WASHINGTON — States left cash-strapped by the coronavirus crisis shouldn’t count on federal bailouts — especially states run by Democrats, President Trump told The Post on Monday.

During a sit-down in the Oval Office, Trump echoed recent remarks by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who last month refused to open federal coffers for “blue state” governments — including New York’s — that have been hit hard by the pandemic.

“I think Congress is inclined to do a lot of things but I don’t think they’re inclined to do bailouts. A bailout is different than, you know, reimbursing for the plague,” said Trump, who also predicted a strong economic rebound from the coronavirus crisis by the end of the year, and offered his opinions on presumptive Democratic challenger Joe Biden’s best pick for a running mate and the sex assault allegations facing the former vice president.

“It’s not fair to the Republicans because all the states that need help — they’re run by Democrats in every case. Florida is doing phenomenal, Texas is doing phenomenal, the Midwest is, you know, fantastic — very little debt.”

Michigan Security Officer Killed for Asking Woman to Put on Face Mask

Three family members have been charged in the killing of a security guard who told a customer at a Michigan Family Dollar store to wear a state-mandated face mask, officials said on Monday.
Calvin Munerlyn, 43, died at a Flint hospital after he was shot in the head Friday, said Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser.
Ramonyea Travon Bishop, 23, Larry Edward Teague, 44, and Sharmel Lashe Teague, 45, have been charged with first-degree premeditated murder, along with other charges, the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Monday.
Sharmel and Larry Teague are married, and Bishop is Sharmel’s son, according to the prosecutor’s office.

“From all indications, Mr. Munerlyn was simply doing his job in upholding the Governor’s Executive Order related to the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of store employees and customers,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in the statement.

WTF is wrong with Michigan. Then we have this winner:

Man arrested after wiping face on Michigan store clerk’s shirt when told to wear mask

HOLLY, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Holly Police Department have arrested the man captured on video wiping his nose and face on the shirt of a store clerk.

Police say the Argentine Township man entered a Dollar Tree store on N. Saginaw St. on May 2. The clerk told him that all in-store customers must wear a mask to enter, per the signs posted on the entry doors.

The man reportedly walked over to the clerk and wiped his nose and face on her shirt, saying, “Here, I will use this as a mask.”

Police say he continued to be loud and disruptive inside the store before leaving in a white van.
