There has to be video of this somewhere. Right?
In an apparent attempt to upstage President Barack Obama’s rousing rendition of “Amazing Grace” during his eulogy of the victims of the Charleston shooting, Senator Ted Cruz reportedly “randomly broke into song” during a campaign event in Ames, Iowa. Strangely, the Republican presidential hopeful chose to sing the song “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, a song originally penned for the 1939 film ‘The Wizard of Oz’. According to a variety of reports from those in attendance at the event, Cruz was speaking on the Supreme Court of the United States’s decision in favor of gay marriage prior to the alleged incident.
“It was really an odd moment,” said attendee Joanne Baker. “Senator Cruz’s voice cracked and he paused. Tears began to well up in his eyes and then he broke into the first part of that song from ‘Wizard of Oz’. We were all really patient and endured it, but unfortunately, the Senator was far too emotional to sound that good.”
Sources claim that after he finished singing, there was an awkward moment of “at least 30 seconds of silence” where Cruz quietly wept and no one in the audience “dared make a sound”. Allegedly, Cruz was so overtaken by emotion he could not continue his campaign speech and members of his campaign staff whisked him away to a waiting vehicle.
“It’s really hard to tell what Ted Cruz was intending with this stunt,” said pundit Chris Stern. “On one hand, this could have been an honest reaction to the SCOTUS decision on gay marriage and could be just Ted Cruz’s way of dealing with things. On the other hand, this could have been a publicity stunt to upstage Obama that backfired tremendously when it was revealed that Ted Cruz can’t sing as well as Barack Obama. I’m sure the Cruz campaign will attempt to bury this incident as several sources in Iowa claimed staffers were asking attendees to politely delete any footage of Sen. Cruz singing from their smartphones.”
