How Many People Have Died of Swine Flu So Far?

7.

A member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims that more than 150 people have died from swine flu, saying it has officially recorded only seven deaths around the world.

Vivienne Allan, from WHO’s patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths – all in Mexico – and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.
Sydney’s swine scared arrivals

Face masks are worn by some at Sydney Airport, but many say strict new swine flu precautions are in reality ‘low key’.

“Unfortunately that [150-plus deaths] is incorrect information and it does happen, but that’s not information that’s come from the World Health Organisation,” Ms Allan told ABC Radio today.

“That figure is not a figure that’s come from the World Health Organisation and, I repeat, the death toll is seven and they are all from Mexico.”

Ms Allan said WHO had confirmed 40 cases of swine flu in the Americas, 26 in Mexico, six in Canada, two in Spain, two in Britain and three in New Zealand.

  1. My college is freaking out about it. They even put together a committee to figure out what to do in case it made its way onto the campus…

People are just going crazy for no good reason whatever happens will happen and there isn’t much we can do about it.

  2. I think that… aculy wait I know that this is just realy LIKE an ordany flu. Just people are not going to the docters when they are felling sick. People should go to the doctors to get checked out and get medicen.

    Sorry for my poor spelling.

  3. One more interesting bit of info: It’s not airborne. Not really a surprise, hardly any virus is. Yet this makes wearing masks rather pointless (except perhaps to protect against specifically coughing or sneezing).

Washing your hands before you eat is still the best thing you can do at the moment. Doesn’t sound all that scary, suddenly.

  4. Caution and careful planning is needed on this but not panic, technically you only get one chance at doing this right. I am just glad we dont have Bushboy in office and do hope its just the flu.

  5. You would think a college wouldn’t buy into this corporate sponsored media scare tactic like the rest of society. I’m not saying that swine flu isn’t legit, but I would bet that most of the “Victims” reported by news died of pre-existing complications en flared by swine flu and are elderly, not swine flu itself. Look at it like fleecing the herd, by media / Medical Providers / Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, and Darwinism. (Mostly Pharm Corps. and Docs.)

  6. This is laboratory confirmed deaths. I’d wager that there are lots of ppl in Mexico never even showing up at a hospital and whose disease or death wouldn’t get confirmed by a lab. Also, what’s the “delay” here? I mean how long does it take for labs to check a case? A day? Week?

  7. @ cdubbb
You forgot to mention the soap conspiracy. Damn Reptoid-Freemasons making us wash our hands! When will the eviloutionist sheeple learn?!

  8. So, if it stays contained, and not many people die, do we call it:
    1) All hype and no sickness?
    2) Orgs like the WHO doing their job right.

For myself, if there are 2 groups I believe are doing their best its the infectious disease folks and the stop nukes from being sold in the local market folks.

  9. Endrju, very nice point. I bet they just want to punch the media in the head for the hysteria they cause over this.

    I know I do. 🙂

  10. How old is this news?

Still, 7 is a LOT less than 2 million, which is the lower estimated death toll given by WHO.

WHO also reports that “almost a million” people around the world die each year from malaria — where’s the news coverage for that??

  11. My wife is a Pharmacist, and since her Boss told her to stock up on Tamaflu and face masks, she’s absolutely freaking out. She wanted me to pull my son out of school and keep him home until this blows over. I pointed out to her the fact that 37,000 people each and every year die from other every day flu’s like Influenza. So far only ONE child in the U.S. has died, and he was FROM MEXICO! To top it off, we live in Florida and there’s not been a SINGLE case even reported here. So what the hell is all the hupla over?

  12. Driving home from a long road trip a couple days ago I got a chance to hear what the right wingnuts on AM talk radio had to say about this situation, so here it is for your entertainment pleasure:

    1) Obama could and should be protecting America against swine flu by closing the MX border, but he isn’t because
    2) he doesnt want to “offend” Mexicans, because
    3) Obama’s plan is to keep “bringing” illegals into this country and pass new laws to suddenly legalize them in order to
    4) form a voting bloc of hundreds of thousands of pro-Obama voters, which Obama will then use to
    5) redistrict large parts of America and then
    6) pass new laws and proclaim himself president-for-life!

And there you have it! That’s the plan, folks. According to right wing hate radio, that is…

  13. According to the CDC as of April 30, 2009 there have been 109 confirmed cases and only one death in Texas. In 1976 in Fort Dix, New Jersey there more then 200 people seriously infected and only one death. There were 1,337 cases of people infected with malaria in the United States during 2002 and there was a reported 8 deaths in the United States alone even though we “eradicated” the disease from the US. Over 2,700 people worldwide die PER DAY EVEY DAY because of malaria. Swine Flu pandemic my butt and anyone that buys into it can’t do math.

  14. jennie, I think you are confusing “deaths” with “cases”. The CDC and WHO were clear that there has been only 1 death stateside.

“Vivienne Allan, from WHO’s patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths – all in Mexico – and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.”

  15. I just sent an email, sources cited, to my local news station who is still reporting ‘over 150 dead in Mexico as the disease spreads around the world’. I wonder if they will side with truth or hype?

  16. In the U.S. there has only been 1 death from the swine flu.

    Check out the cdc website:
    http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/

Due to the low mortality rate I don’t believe that we have much to worry about this strain of the swine flu. As for higher fatality rate in Mexico than anywhere else I think it is more wide spread in Mexico than they believe just less diagnosed. The real concern should be is about whether or not this strain mutates in to something more lethal.

  17. One think what everyone needs to think about is that the worst can happen. It can happen to you. I speek from life experiance. Just when you think it will never happen to me it does. That’s the hard reality of it. and anyone with a family kids loved ones need to stop and think it threw.

  18. 4,500 people in California die from regular flu. I don’t see face masks, hysteria, and news coverage for that, yet 20 people die and they call it a “pandemic”. Seems a little odd, don’t you think so too…?

  19. Yeah, you’re right, a lot of people die every year just from the influenzas that are going around regularly. They die a lot from just dehydration; not replentishing their bodies’ water when they have diarhea and are vomiting. There are other things, but I believe the dehydration is a key part. This is just like any regular flu strain the only reason it is becoming a big deal is because it has hybridized, mutates more rapidly, and has spread to nine countries or close to that number. So because of this there is a POTENTIAL that it could be a lot worse than other flu’s. This is why there is so much coverage. It is a combination of swine, bird, and human flu’s and has spread, and has the potetial to get terrible, so they just want to document it and follow it as best they can so they can keep good record on it.

Buy, yeah, if you think you have it, go to the doctor, make sure you drink a lot of water, rest, and just let it run it’s course.

  20. I don’t know what to think about all this. I think people are overreacting just a little bit…most of the people that died were from Mexico, and I’ll bet (though I don’t know) that many of them did not have access to a good doctor and/or were living in less-than-sanitary conditions. I do think it’s a good idea to keep our hands washed and stay away from sick people, but I think that’s something that should be common policy. And this whole mask thing is silly–viruses are too small to be kept out by them, and this isn’t even an airborne virus.

  21. Hello, i am hailey i am in grade seven and i wanted to know how this all started and when it all started. I want to let you know that i am scared…and i think that the schools should be shut down because if one person has it that would be a bigger chance to pass it along in our school. Please find a vaccination!

    Thank you!

  22. i think every 1 is going over the top with this swine flu pleople who got i died in mexico so why are we all getting scared? more people die of other flue’s.

  23. I think its incredibly stupid that these people believ that the cause of this is pigs ….. how bout influenza why dont people flip out bout that … yet they waste there time with a sickness FROM A FREAKIN PIG!!!!!

  24. I think swine flu is not that serious…. I mean only 150 people have…… umm… died of swine flu… like in the time it has been going on… besides, I live in South Africa… NO WHERE NEAR most cases… anyway thx for reading this…

Four new cases of swine flu have been identified in England today. This takes the total number of cases in the UK to 32 (28 in England and four in Scotland).

  26. all epidemics started small and 150 deaths that sounds like a lot to me for something that started a couple of weeks ago

  27. not obama bush go to the doctor if your sick we don’t want 1 death in the united states to become two

  30. I feel sorry for all the suckers falling for this crap… 7 people have died….Mexico City has around 20 million people…of which about 10 die or get killed per day… I live in southwestern texas and Just attended a big Festival with about 10,000 people about 30yards from the Rio Grande and no one down here is worried. WASH YOUR HANDS AND KEEP DISTANCE FROM SOMEONE WHO IS OBVIOUSLY SICK

  31. I am not mad or have no problems with obama but isnt it weird how he went to Mexico to stop the drug war and one week later he came back and tht’s when swine flu started… =/

  32. I thought that the post about the right wing hatred by Patricio was pretty interesting. I am not saying that I believe it, but an interesting conspiracy theory.

  33. no i seriously do have a soar throat.. doesnt that have something to do w/ it?? do u thinki should go get tested??

  34. o.k people you can bet the swine flu people o.k? all you need to do is drink lots of water eat lots of fruit and veg and you’ll be fine!!! =):):D:

  35. i am not worried but concerned. the swine flu is really bad nd needs us to stop it. Good people are soon gonna get hurt

  36. there are less then 200 world wide
over 100 000 people die of regular flu every year
over 5.6 million die of smoking
whats the big deal over swine flu?

  37. ARE YOU CRAZY??? Lets say you got this flu Mr. Whoocares!! what would you do ? you would get soo ashamed of what you’re saying!

Anyways there is a big mistake by now more than 40 MILLION people died from swine flu world wide. I made a few researches and found that the site i saw suspending “40 million people died of swine flu” was a long time ago so now maybe even 50 million people have it and died from it and to assure u here in Lebanon there are 35 people who HAVE swine flu today in one hospital !!! Beware this is very dangerous. Don’t get out of the house a lot i’m glad i’m not. Well good luck 2 all people who have it in like getting rid of it. <3

  38. this all a lie, made up to start killing people.
the every rich are tired of sharing this planet with us hard working people. they have all the money, they have the power. now they want the planet to themselves. AND IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME……… WHO CONTROLS THE WORLD MONETARY SYSTEM?

  39. This is going to be bad. My brother-in-law is a doctor and he said he has never seen anything like this. He’s has already seen as many people sick with this flu and it’s not flu season yet.

  40. We live in Florida and my husband’s friend died of swine flu a month ago that he and two of his buddies picked up in Orlando. He’s was 21 and had no underlying problems (his friends recovered with no problems). I think we all have a right to be concerned, but panic-mode is definitely a no-no. Still, when it hits close to home the numbers begin to have a bit more meaning. Good luck, everybody.

  41. Here’s a theory… Maybe the hype about the H1N1(swine flu)is a distraction from the fact the national debt is 1.42 trillion and the national unemployment is 9.8%(the highest in 26 years)Mmmm.

  42. hi all peopl.
i am from Afghanistan, now in Afghanistan about 200 people died from swine flu about 170 peopl was from USA army, Canadian and etc.. and 30 people Afghan people was died.
it come out in Afghanistan from Bagram air field there is All USA army they are infected with is disease i think US should do any thing about his army other wise people in here decide to fights against this.

    1. seriously not bein ruude but DO WE WANNA DIE EARLY??? no
so keep ur thoughts to urself please, some of us (ie me) are really offended by your lack of respect

  43. Most people in our town that have been sick only lose a day or two of work or school. They run a fever, for 24 hours, have a severe headache, sore throat and swollen glands, and sinus congestion and a dry non-productive cough. They have about 3 rough days, followed by a week of having the headcold. The medical staff have stopped testing everyone for swine flu, stating that all cases are swine flu, because it is just too early for it to be seasonal flu, and everyone that they had tested were positive. Many were sick in September and October which is traditionally too early for seasonal flu. I know that 30,000 die annually in our nation from the seasonal flu. I’m not sure how many have died from Swine flu so far, but I think it is a minute number in comparison. Of course the season is still young. But it almost seems like everyone is overreacting. I know we see the pictures of healthy individuals hospitalized for weeks and months and have heard the stories of loved ones lost. But I’m thinking that with 30,000 deaths a year, these stories are out there every year and we never hear of them. I don’t quite understand what the reason for our government making this a huge issue is all about. Is it political, is it hype, is our government getting some kind of kick back from the big Pharmaceutical companies who manufacture the vaccine? These are questions we will probably never know. But something is definitely rotten in Denmark!

  44. The new unemployment numbers just came out this morning. We have hit a new high of 10.2%. Our country has not seen this percent since 1983! But maybe if we are all concerned about swine flu, we won’t notice!

  45. All of you people who are afraid of swine flu need to get a life. As one person already stated the regular flu is way worse than this. Along with this you should all know that the proper term is H1N1 not swine flu. We dont need to add any negative connotations to the pork industry. Thank you to all the idiots out there who believe that eating pork can cause you to contract the disease. You’re costing the pork industry millions and subsequently my family
