Phony Flier Says Virginians Vote on Different Days

A phony State Board of Elections flier advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5 is being circulated in several Hampton Roads localities, according to state elections officials.

In fact, Election Day, for voters of all political stripes, remains Nov. 4.

The somewhat official-looking flier – it features the state board logo and the state seal – is dated Oct. 24 and indicates that “an emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the follwing (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process.”

The four-paragraph flier concludes with: “We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but felt this was the only way to ensure fairness to the complete electorial process.”

Boy, 8, shoots himself to death at Mass. gun show

From AP:

WESTFIELD, Mass. (AP) — With an instructor watching, an 8-year-old boy at a gun fair aimed an Uzi at a pumpkin and pulled the trigger as his dad reached for a camera.

It was his first time shooting a fully automatic machine gun, and the recoil of the weapon was too much for him. He lost control and fatally shot himself in the head.

Now gun safety experts — and some gun enthusiasts at the club where the shooting happened — are wondering why such a young child was allowed to fire a weapon used in war. Local, state and federal authorities are also investigating whether everyone involved had proper licenses or if anyone committed a criminal act.

109 Year Old Daughter of a Slave Votes for Obama

Amanda Jones, 109, the daughter of a man born into slavery, has lived a life long enough to touch three centuries. And after voting consistently as a Democrat for 70 years, she has voted early for the country’s first black presidential nominee.

The middle child of 13, Jones, who is African American, is part of a family that has lived in Republican-leaning Bastrop County for five generations. The family has remained a fixture in Cedar Creek and other parts of the county, even when its members had to eat at segregated barbecue dives and walk through the back door while white customers walked through the front, said Amanda Jones’ 68-year-old daughter, Joyce Jones.

For at least a decade, Amanda Jones worked as a maid for $20 a month, Joyce Jones said. She was a housewife for 72 years and helped her now-deceased husband, C.L. Jones, manage a store.

Amanda Jones, a delicate, thin woman wearing golden-rimmed glasses, giggled as the family discussed this year’s presidential election. She is too weak to go the polls, so two of her 10 children — Eloise Baker, 75, and Joyce Jones — helped her fill out a mail-in ballot for Barack Obama, Baker said. “I feel good about voting for him,” Amanda Jones said.

Orthodox Jewish Racism in Iowa

From The Grand Forks Herald:

A secular Jewish writer, Stephen Bloom had a sort of religious if visceral epiphany in the middle of trying to report about the unusual ultra-orthodox Jewish group that moved into Postville, Iowa, 20 years ago to run a huge kosher slaughtering plant.

Walking with the Hasidic rabbi down the street of the town of 1,300 on a spring morning in the late 1990s, Bloom said “good morning” to a couple of local men fixing the sidewalk.

“Don’t do that,” the rabbi said. “We don’t acknowledge them.”

“Why?” Bloom asked.

“We don’t interact with the locals,” the rabbi said. “That’s the beginning of the Holocaust.”

Hasidic kids would begin playing with their Iowan neighbors, then families would start to socialize and soon there would be intermarriage, the rabbi explained. “Then, the Holocaust.”
