Most people, after arriving at the conclusion that Jehovah is
not God, that the Bible is not an inspired book, and that the
Christian religion, like other religions, is the creation of man,
usually say: “There must be a Supreme Being, but Jehovah is not his
name, and the Bible is not his word. There must be somewhere an
over-ruling Providence or Power.”
This position is just as untenable as the other. He who cannot
harmonize the cruelties of the Bible with the goodness of Jehovah,
cannot harmonize the cruelties of Nature with the goodness and
wisdom of a supposed Deity. He will find it impossible to account
for pestilence and famine, for earthquake and storm, for slavery,
for the triumph of the strong over the weak, for the countless
victories of injustice. He will find it impossible to account for
martyrs — for the burning of the good, the noble, the loving, by
the ignorant, the malicious, and the infamous.
Robert Green Ingersoll – “Why I Am Agnostic”
I may have linked to this before but it’s worth another round. A huge gallery of coin stacking pictures.
Wikipedia has a list and explanation of primitive or infantile reflexes:
Adult humans have many reflexes, but there are some very interesting ones that are specific to them in the first year of life. These reflexes disappear (or are inhibited) later, as the child moves through a normal course of child development. These primitive reflexes are also called infantile reflexes, infant reflexes, or newborn reflexes.
The frontal lobes are responsible for suppressing these primitive reflexes in adults, but the reflexes begin in the brain stem.
They’re charging this guy with a hate crime because he flushed a couple of Korans down a toilet. Now I agree that he should be charged with vandalism and perhaps a misdemeanor if he stole the books from the library to flush them, but charging a person with a hate crime because it’s a holy book is political correctness gone wild. I wonder if he would have been charged with a hate crime if it was a bible or a torah. I’m certain he wouldn’t have been charged with a hate crime if it was the God Delusion which would have gotten him a medal in some states. I’m against desecrating any book or form of literature but I certainly wouldn’t take offense if somebody decides to burn or destroy a copy of the Complete Works of Robert Green Ingersoll. Charging someone with a hate crime because they destroyed a book that some people consider holy is a slippery slope.
Stanislav Shmulevich of Brooklyn was arrested on charges of criminal mischief and aggravated harassment, both hate crimes, police said. It was unclear if he was a student at the school. A message left at the Shmulevich home was not immediately returned.
The Islamic holy book was found in a toilet at Pace’s lower Manhattan campus by a teacher on Oct. 13. A student discovered another book in a toilet on Nov. 21, police said
Muslim activists had called on Pace University to crack down on hate crimes after the incidents. As a result, the university said it would offer sensitivity training to its students
The school was accused by Muslim students of not taking the incident seriously enough at first. Pace classified the first desecration of the holy book as an act of vandalism, but university officials later reversed themselves and referred the incident to the New York Police Department’s hate crimes unit.
