This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany, as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin. The photo was taken on the day of inauguration.

Gee, how else is a boat supposed to cross a river??!
Quite an amazing structure. Reminds me a little of the flume ride at the local amusement park.
Chris,
This is nothing new, Rochester, NY had the very same thing in the 1850’s with the Erie Canal crossing the Genesee River (unrelated info, the Genesee is one of the very few rivers in the Northern Hemisphere that flow from South to North).
anyway,
yours is the best blog I’ve ever come across.
Bill
My old folks had a boat, I remember when i was a little kid that we went over a similar thing. I also remeber elevators for boats in the south of belgium…
