There are some wonderful pictures of Vegas at this UNLV site although that city changes so fast that some of those hotels are now gone.

Wired's Profile on Cirque du Soleil

From Wired:
In 2005, 40 million people came to Las Vegas. Half of them saw a big production show, spending more than $100 a person on tickets — that's $2 billion for the casinos that house the theaters. Shows have gotten bigger and wilder in the past decade, with Wayne Newton and the Rat Pack replaced by... well, by Cirque du Soleil. The Montreal-based juggernaut currently has five shows running in Las Vegas. Love, the newest, opened last summer.

But Cirque has competition. Up the street from the Mirage, the new Wynn Las Vegas has its own razzle-dazzle show. It's called Le Rêve, and like Cirque it features acrobats doing impossible-looking things in the air, onstage, and underwater. Created by Franco Dragone, a former Cirque stalwart, Le Rêve is casino impresario Steve Wynn's attempt to work some Cirque-like magic.

Which Cirque du Soleil Show Should You See in Vegas

From the Moveable Buffet:
More often than I am asked what show to see in Vegas, I am asked what Cirque show to see. People who want to see Phantom or Penn & Teller don't need me to tell them. Those shows are known quantities. People just need to read the show names from time-to-time in Vegas to be reminded they are here. Same with Celine and Elton. But while Cirque has gone to great lengths to market all of their shows as different, the truth remains Cirque has certain qualities that assert themselves in all of their productions. Surrealism, acrobats, and an unmistakable overall sensibility. People ask, if they can only see one Cirque show which one should it be? So, here are my choices and reasons for which Cirque show to see.

Legoland's Vegas Strip

From Vegastripping:
Southern California theme park Legoland has constructed a gigantic replica of the Vegas strip using 20 million tiny plastic bricks. Notable features include the smooth pyramid shaped LuXor, a 20 foot tall replica of Stratosphere, working roller coasters, showgirls and... get this... Lego Porn Slappers.

It took 15 designers over 3 years to design and build the Lego Vegas at the Lego headquarters in Billund, Denmark. The Lego Vegas attraction opens March 29th.

Stardust to Dust

The Las Vegas Strip's first mass-market casino-hotel was imploded early Tuesday in a hail of fireworks to make way for Boyd Gaming Corp.'s $4.4 billion megaresort Echelon. Hundreds of people partied beneath tents and on makeshift patios before Boyd chairman Bill Boyd's four grandsons pushed a plunger to detonate the former Stardust casino. The blast generated a massive dust cloud that chased the revelers into cars, buses and nearby casinos.
Even a demolition is a show worth watching in Vegas.

Last Night in Vegas

We have one day left in Vegas before we fly back across the country to chilly old Boston. We're staying at the Bellagio for the last leg of the trip and the view of the fountains and the Paris hotel is amazing.

Blogging will resume Wednesday once I get through deleting the 10,000 spam emails I have in the inbox.

R.I.P. Stardust (1958-2006)

The Stardust closed today.
LAS VEGAS -- The Stardust, the neon-wrapped casino with a mobbed-up past whose 1,065 rooms once set the standard for size on the Las Vegas Strip, witnessed its last roll of the dice Wednesday.

Wistful longtime employees and loyal gamblers gathered for a last farewell to the iconic 48-year-old institution, which is to be razed early next year to make way for Boyd Gaming Corp.'s planned $4 billion Echelon Place resort.

The Stardust opened July 2, 1958, as the world's largest hotel and catered to middle America with $6-a-night rooms and low-minimum stakes gambling.

Oops

Steve Wynn accidentally put his elbow through a painting (Picasso's "Le Rêve") he had just sold for $139 million dollars.
The guests came at five-thirty, and Wynn ushered them in. On the wall to his left and right were several paintings, including a Matisse, a Renoir, and “Le Rêve.” The other three walls were glass, looking out onto an enclosed garden. He began to tell the story of the Picasso’s provenance. As he talked, he had his back to the picture. He was wearing jeans and a golf shirt. Wynn suffers from an eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa, which affects his peripheral vision and therefore, occasionally, his interaction with proximate objects, and, without realizing it, he backed up a step or two as he talked. “So then I made a gesture with my right hand,” Wynn said, “and my right elbow hit the picture. It punctured the picture.” There was a distinct ripping sound. Wynn turned around and saw, on Marie-Thérèse Walter’s left forearm, in the lower-right quadrant of the painting, “a slight puncture, a two-inch tear. We all just stopped. I said, ‘I can’t believe I just did that. Oh, shit. Oh, man.’ ”

Wynn turned around again. He put his pinkie in the hole and observed that a flap of canvas had been pushed back. He told his guests, “Well, I’m glad I did it and not you.”

The Casino Experience

From Signal vs. Noise:
From a design/experience perspective, casinos are fascinating places:

1) There are no windows. Gamblers have no idea whether it’s light or dark or sunny or rainy outside.

2) There are no clocks. Dealers are forbidden from wearing watches. Time becomes meaningless.

3) There’s intentionally poor navigation. They are built like mazes meaning it’s usually tough to find a way out.

4) There’s a constant barrage of noises. Slot machines spin, games ding and dong, coins hit metal, there’s the pitter patter of the people running the games, etc. Many of these sounds, like the ringing of the slots, is there to give you a false sense of hope (“If all of those bells are ringing, somebody must be winning!”).

Vegas Makes It Crime To Feed Homeless People

But can you still feed the pigeons?
LAS VEGAS -- A battle is brewing over a new Las Vegas ordinance that bans providing food or meals to the indigent at city parks.

The Las Vegas City Council unanimously passed a law, which went into effect Thursday, making it a crime to feed the homeless at city parks. It carries a maximum penalty of $1,000 and six months in jail. The law bans giving away or selling food to anyone who could get assistance from official sources under state law, and officials said city marshals will get specialized training to enforce it.

The citys mayor, Oscar Goodman, dismissed questions about how marshals will identify the homeless so that they can enforce the ordinance.

"Certain truths are self-evident," Goodman said. "You know who's homeless."

Vegas Lists

Some of these are informative and some are just funny. Here is their list for Worst Stuff About The Venetian
Description: I have issues with the Venetian and here's why...

Shoddy Materials - This place is made out of balsa-wood and Duct tape.

Architecture - Nice try. The front area, instead of looking like beautiful Venice instead looks like a parking lot. Too much concrete!

Service - These guys go out of their way to be snooty - is that what supposed 5-star service means?

Focus - The focus here is on one thing: the bottom line. Great for investors, bad for guests. If they can save a buck, they will. I prefer places that put the guests first and understand that treating people right is always a good strategy.
(He's right by the way. The Venetian sucks)

The $20 Rule

Anybody ever try the $20 rule before?
The "$20 Rule" is always worth a try. Many Las Vegas hotels charge a premium for a Strip view. The desk staff also has some latitude on upgrading guests. Place a folded up $20 bill on the counter partially under your ID and/or credit card so that the denomination is visible. As you slide them across, ask for a room with a Strip View (or other upgrade).

If they can't accommodate you or insist on an extra charge you can simply retract the bill. If they accommodate you, a small price to pay to see one of the most famous views in the world out of your window.
More Las Vegas tipping guidelines here.

Price Comparison and Statistical Breakdown Survey of Nevada's Bordellos

I swear I found this by accident. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
This is an online and ongoing survey of the rates paid by customers of legal Nevada prostitutes. Other information is also included in this survey.

It was back in November 1994 that I first started giving advice online about visiting the legal Nevada brothels. I am hardly an expert on the topic, or at least no more knowledgeable about LPIN than dozens of my good friends, both female as well as male. However, I seem to have dedicated a significant portion of my life to educating people on this subject, and have learned much and hope to learn more. Let information flow freely!

Cocktail Doll

cocktaildoll.jpg

I burned about an hour reading this today. Good stuff.
Have you ever wondered how much you "should" tip a cocktail waitress? Are the drinks really free, are they watered down, is it the real stuff, or what? Just who are these girls...are they strippers or hookers? And how do you not piss them off so they don't spit (or do worse) in your drinks?

My name is Dollie, I'm a Las Vegas cocktail waitress and every day I meet hundreds of people from all over the world. Most people seem to be well-intentioned and sincerely want to know how things are done here in Vegas so that they can have a good time, and that they can also bring enjoyment to the people serving them. And then there are the rest...the endless stream of poor lost souls who have this need to dump their stupid questions and comments to cocktail waitresses...sigh!

The information on this web site is from my personal experience as a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas, as well as things I've been told from other cocktail waitresses, bartenders, and other casino employees. Please know that I am not speaking as an authority on any topic, just the truth as I know it.

My Casino Chip Collection

Terribles.jpg

Impressive collection.
I collect predominantly $1 house chips from casinos all over North America. I don't have much of an interest in old, obsolete chips, tokens, commemoratives or higher denominations, but I'll occasionally pick up something out of the ordinary that tickles my fancy. Some day I'd like to visit all of these casinos, but for the time being, I've tried to write a few words about each of the ones that I've actually visited.

Tremendous site! How come it took me so long to stumble upon it?
Las Vegas is growing quickly as Steve Wynn has once again triggered the next building boom. Many new developments on and around the Las Vegas Strip are in various stages of planning and quite a few have already broken ground. Downtown is undergoing an unprecedented transformation with many new urbanization projects and public facilities.

This site is an up-to-date collection of news and renderings of imminent and proposed hotel, condo and other projects. You'll find photos of projects under construction and renderings of dream projects which may never come to be. On the Cool Stuff page you'll find a heap of nifty things as well as ranks, ratings and statistics of the major hotels and convention centers.

Las Vegas Casino Death Watch

Only Vegas freaks will be interested in this. But, I'm a Vegas freak.
This is Nick Christenson's Las Vegas Casino Death Watch page. Here we track the hotel/casinos that we feel are most likely to close their doors in the near future.

This page focuses on the larger Las Vegas Strip and Downtown hotel/casino combination properties. We're not going to make quite the same effort to keep track of the locals places since unless their name has "Station" or "Coast" in it, they all look to us like they might close their doors at any time. Of course, these days there aren't that many locals joints that don't have "Station" or "Coast" in their names. Also, these properties don't tend to have the same sort of history associated with them that the more familiar names do.
I noticed that the Tropicana has filed for construction although it seems they will just be adding on. Hopefully, they will do what the Trop in Atlantic City did with their "The Quarter".

Vegas Sign Graveyard

Only in Vegas could you have a museum dedicated to old hotel and casino signs.
The Neon Museum, currently an outdoor walking tour, is located downtown at the Fremont Street Experience. It was created by the city of Las Vegas to preserve that piece of Vegas history.

Not only are the signs historical, with their spectacular colors, intricate animation and sheer size, they are also considered by many to be true works of art.

Has there ever been a city that looked better on a postcard than Las Vegas?

Hotels gave them away, souvenir shops sold them for a few cents. Yet they're priceless for the memories they bring.
