The Conflict in Darfur Through Children's Eyes

dafur.jpg

One of the saddest links I have posted.
We were running from the burning houses. Janjaweed and soldiers with guns and planes and bombs came, all together, quickly. They were shooting…my uncle was shot. I saw them taking women and girls away. All of us—my family—we were screaming and running from the Janjaweed to hide in the wadi [riverbed or oasis]…holding each other by the arms to keep together. Here in camp we are safe, but my father…he was lost.”

PDF Download Firefox Extension

My home computer can open pdf files without a problem but if I accidentally click on a link that opens as a pdf file on my work computer, it will spend the next 5 minutes trying to find enough spare memory to open it. I can't be positive but once I think I saw smoke emitting from the back of the computer as it huffed and puffed to open one particularly pesky pdf document. This extension will solve that dilemma.

Guess The Google

gtg.jpg

Cool game.
After creating Montage-a-google, several people wrote to me suggesting I make a game based on the same technology. Montage-a-google is a simple web app that uses Google's image search to generate a large gridded montage of images based on keywords (search terms) entered by the user. Guess-the-google reverses this process by picking the keywords for you, the player must then guess what keyword made up the image - it's surprisingly addictive.

Hope She is OK

This site hasn't been updated in a few years. That isn't a very encouraging sign about her mission.
Cheryl Stearns will attempt the world's highest skydive when she jumps from a specially designed balloon from an altitude of 130,000 feet. She will be following in the footsteps of Col. Joseph Kittinger who set the original skydiving record of 102,800 feet in 1960.

Ghetto Tattooing

Unless you are a ninja, hot babes will never pork you unless you have a tattoo. Unfortunately good tattoos cost hundreds of dollars that would be better spent on hot babes. Its a catch-69 situation. But there's a cheaper way out - if you are a hairy ape like me you can just shave designs onto your body!

Back

1,500 miles, 12 states and 125,900 sightings of Shoney's restaurants in the Southern states later, I am back. There isn't too much to say about the drive from Miami to Boston since the Interstate is fast but bare. The weirdest thing was hitting South of the Border right before entering North Carolina. We drove by it quite early in the morning so nothing was really open and there was no point in stopping. We ended up getting to NJ about 8pm on Monday so decided to stop over in Atlantic City to rest up for a day. Or two. A few quick random thoughts about the drive.
  • There are so many fireworks stores in the South that if the Civil War took place today, they would have enough explosives to conquer the North in three weeks.
  • I ate at a Maurice's BBQ that had pamphlets in the gift store titled, "How the South Will Defeat Northern Liberalism". Needless to say, I avoided saying anything with an "ar" to hide my Boston accent.
  • All road trips that I take from now on will pass through or end in Vegas. Atlantic City will do if on the East Coast.
  • Total amount of money spent on tolls from FL to VA = $0.00. Total amount from MD to MA = $20.00+.
It may take me a bit to get caught up blogging but a little at a time does the trick. Thanks to everyone who left me comments or emailed me.

How To Define Beauty

On the Inefficiency of Beauty Contests, & A Suggestion for their Modernization.
One thousand such ships makes 20,000 tons. By this measure, the woman who breaks a bottle of champagne over the prow of a ship of 20,000 tons displacement and so launches it, becomes the equal to Menelaus' wandering spouse. At least so far as maritime affairs are concerned.

If an average-size woman were to do no more than launch herself--by getting into the bathtub, say-- she would automatically get credit for about .3 hundredths of a ship launching. Larger women would do a little better.

If ships launched were the sole measure of beauty, Eleanor Roosevelt and Mamie Eisenhower would emerge, without peer, as the most desirable of women. Marilyn Monroe would not even be in the running. The pyromaniacal inclinations of the toothsome Mamie and Eleanor were, however, imperceptible. They didn't even smoke.

Beer Floats

beer6.jpg

I hate beer so this idea made me retch. But that's just me.
So, we were sitting around 3FS Headquarters one day thinking up things to do when it hit us, beer floats! We're not sure where the idea came from or why, but we were intrigued, so we set out to do an experiment. The experiment had to be scientific, yet as entertaining as possible. In order to try as many different styles and brands of beers we bought the Beers From Around the World, which holds sixteen beers and threw in a Sierra Nevada Wheat for Chico. We then got a whole bunch of clear plastic cups and some Dryers Vanilla ice cream.

Thank You

Thank you everyone for your kind emails, comments and wishes for me and my family. It has been a long, stressful day and we are saddened to have lost my grandfather but happy that he had such a long and pleasurable life. Not many people are lucky enough to live to be 96 years old and he sure got to see the world change over and over again during his life.

Thanks again. You have made it a bit difficult to keep a cynical disposition with the onslaught of warm emails and kind comments. My subway ride into Boston tomorrow will surely bring it back however :)

No Blogging Today

My Grandfather passed away this morning around 7:15. He was 96. I was lucky enough to be there at his bedside when it happened.

I will be busy most of the day making arrangements and being with family so I am sorry but there won't be any updates today.

Sweat Ship

Sigh. If I had to do it all over I would have just skipped college and learned to be a plumber where you deal with a lot less shit than in the software industry.
Three San Diego entrepreneurs plan to start a cut-rate outsourcing plant for software development three miles off the coast of Los Angeles aboard a used cruise ship moored in international waters.

Wired with a fat T3 pipe fed by microwave, SeaCode would employ 600 developers - the bulk of them non-U.S. citizens - who could crank out code around the clock at a lower cost and higher rate of efficiency than their American counterparts ...

The beauty part (at least according to the proponents) is that business would be booming, the headquarters could change sail wherever business took it, and RnR would be just a half-hour water-taxi ride away. In your neighborhood.

Dear Microsoft Word

Heh.
4.) If I’m writing a ten page paper about, oh, say rhetorical discourse, and I’m on page nine and we’ve (you and I) have been working together for about five hours and I suddenly type “rheotoric,” can’t you REMEMBER that I have correctly typed “rhetoric” nine thousand times by this point and just fucking fix it for me? I have a laptop. Right clicks on those are annoying as shit.

8.) Sometimes, I am just right with the grammar and you’re not.

9.) Is it going to hurt my eyes to see the whole damn menu if I click on File or Edit? What are you ashamed of?

I'm Just Saying

ratzinger.jpg
If I had to choose the new pope, I probably would have gone with one of the non-Hitler Youth cardinals. But that's just me.

Update:
I am getting a lot of email of differing opinions about Ratz... er Pope Benedict XVI being in the Hitler Youth and why it should or shouldn't matter since it was compulsory. For the record, I have no clue whether he joined because he had no choice or he goosestepped as fast as he could to join the Hitler Youth. I just think that they would have been better off electing a pope that didn't have that baggage. I mean we are talking about the Pope, the heir to St. Peter. Why would you elect anyone to that position that had anything to do with the Nazis?

Granted, McDonald's and I have a history, but isn't this all a little presumptuous? And do they really need to be dragging the L word into it? They didn't even have the courtesy to say they were lovin' me back! (I won't lie. It stings.)

I thought I'd help Ronald out and whip up my own set of McStickers that cover a slightly larger emotional spectrum

Reagan's Raiders Comic

reagansraider.jpg
The 1980's brought us plenty of things we'd rather forget. Among those things there were shitty comics, and a shitty president, but it wasn't until Monroe Arnold tried his hand at writing comics (luckily for the first and last time.) that those two pillars of shittiness were combined forming perhaps one of the worst comics I've ever had the pleasure of owning.

History of the Batmobile

1949-batmobile.jpg

Yes, above is the 1949 version of the Batmobile (in Batman and Robin Serials)
The Batmobile made its career debut in Batman #5, then appeared on a comic cover for the first time for Batman #20. Because of different artists' interpretations of what the car should be, it changed size, shape, and features frequently. Later, as the car was marketed beyond the comics, more forms appeared based on practical or aesthetic considerations. In the 1960s, the first full size, fully operational Batmobile was built for the TV show Batman, and had to face financial and functional questions.

NNDB

NNDB is an intelligence aggregator that tracks the activities of people we have determined to be noteworthy, both living and dead. Superficially, it seems much like a "Who's Who" where a noted person's curriculum vitae is available (the usual information such as date of birth, a biography, and other essential facts.)

But it mostly exists to document the connections between people, many of which are not always obvious. A person's otherwise inexplicable behavior is often understood by examining the crowd that person has been hanging out with.

Celebrity Wedding Database

I went through a few of the entries and some of them have a lot of details. Britney Spear's first wedding was not one of them however.
Who:Singer Britney Spears and childhood pal Jason Allen Alexander

Where: Las Vegas, Nevada

When: Jan. 3, 2004

The Ceremony: Las Vegas quickie weddings are nothing new. This union was quickly arranged; reports are that Britney Spears and Alexander had the bellman of the Palms Casino Hotel drive them in the hotel limo to the Little White Wedding Chapel.

The Dress: The wedding attire was super casual: Spears wore jeans and a baseball cap.

Comedy Movie Tournament

This is a GREAT idea! Norbizness from Happy Furry Puppy Story Time with Norbizness (or from now on HFPSTWN), has set up a tournament pitting comedy movies against each other. For example:
Bracket 1
Monty Python's The Life of Brian (1) vs. Heathers (8)
Sullivan’s Travels (4) vs. Animal House (5)
Some Like It Hot (2) vs. Repo Man (7)
Blazing Saddles (3) vs. The General (6)
You can go to his site to vote and see the rest of the brackets.

Overclocking TI Graphing Calculators

TurboSwitch.jpg

With step by step instructions and photos.
Expansion and upgrades are becoming more and more popular as knowledge about the internal workings of the TI graphing calculators continues to grow. Years ago I accelerated my own TI-85 (original instructions by Boris Lutz and Keith L. Miller). Curently, the TI-81, TI-82, TI-83, TI-85, TI-86, TI-89, TI-92,a nd TI-92 Plus can be accelerated. The 81, 85 and 86 can be accelerated to approximately 2-3x their normal speed, about 18 MHz. The TI-82 and TI-83 can also be accelerated to about 1.5-2x normal speed. They only about double their speed to around 12 MHz. The TI-89 and 92 can be accelerated to around 20 MHz!

Jasenovac Concentration Camp

One of the largest, but lesser known camps of WWII.
On the night of August 29, 1942, bets were made as to who could liquidate the largest number of inmates. Father Petar Brzica, a Catholic priest, cut the throats of 1,360 prisoners with a especially designed butcher's knife (called srbosjek or Serb-cutter). Having been proclaimed the prize-winner of the competition, he was dubbed "King of the Cut-throats". A gold watch, a silver service, a roasted suckling pig, and wine were among his rewards.

Credit Card Theft

Cool story about a guy who tracks down the punks who stole his credit card #.
This morning, I found out that thousands of dollars of charges had been made on two of my credit cards in the past two days. Now, the identity thieves are sitting in jail. This is how it happened. It involves identity theft, a careless thief, one pissed-off Ovid and lots of luck.

Token TV Time

tokentv-fsm.jpg
Control the amount of time your child is allowed to watch the TV or play video games.

The TokenTV connects before the TV and controls the signal. It uses state of the art electronics. There is a tiny battery powered computer inside that controls its operations. Each token allows for 35 minutes of viewing time. Tokens can be added for longer viewing times. A blinking light notifies the user when the time is almost up. It can also detect tampering! It has a keyed access lock that also acts as a parental override switch for viewing without tokens.

Electronic Handheld Game Museum

Mattel-Baseball.jpg

Impressive!
My goal with this website is to document (primarily photographically) every electronic handheld game made in the late 1970's to the mid 1980's. Collecting these is a hobby of mine, and I wanted to create a complete online encyclopedia of all of them, not just the ones in my collection. Companies such as Tiger, MGA, etc produced TONs of LCD games (and still do in some cases), so I am only attempting to complete these sections up to about 1984 (though there are some newer ones).

How To Perform an Autopsy

au4.gif

Just in time for lunch.
The top of the skull is removed, and the brain is very carefully cut free of its attachments from inside the skull. The chest organs, including the heart and lungs, are inspected. Sometimes the pathologist takes blood from the heart to check for bacteria in the blood. For this, he uses a very large hypodermic needle and syringe. He may also find something else that will need to be sent to the microbiology lab to search for infection. Sometimes the pathologist will send blood, urine, bile, or even the fluid of the eye for chemical study and to look for medicine, street drugs, alcohols, and/or poisons.

Cuss Control Academy

You can hire this guy to learn how to clean up your filthy potty mouth. I am sure it is reasonably priced:
Fees:
A typical presentation ranges from 30 minutes to an hour. The cost is $ 1,500 in the greater Chicago area, and $2,500 plus expenses if travel is involved.
$2,500??? Holy Fucking Shit!!

How Often

How often is the FBI's Most Wanted website updated? Not often.
It has been almost four years since 9/11, and capturing those responsible is such a priority that not one of the 30,000 people who work at the FBI---and whose salaries we pay---has gotten around to updating the "Most Wanted" profiles of Bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri to include any mention of 9/11. And both profiles say the two are "currently thought to be in Afghanistan." Maybe that's why we haven't found them; we're looking in the wrong country.

Caltech vs. MIT

frontmit.jpg backmit.jpg

Both Caltech and MIT require that students put in a lot of hard work studying math and science. Because the stress is so intense, we students at Caltech believe that pranks are an important, if not essential, way to relax and have a little fun. We are familiar with MIT's tradition of hacks and hope that we can merge the cultures at the two schools, if only for a short time. We propose that MIT joins us in a pranking/hacking war. As you may have already noticed, we struck first, so now it is MIT's turn.
They have pictures of the pranks they pulled at MIT this past week. I thought the T-shirt prank was a nice touch but the others were fairly bland. The prank Yale pulled on Harvard last year is still my favorite.

UpgradeMyWife.com

Is there a presumptuous asshole of the year award? If so, then this is my nominee. You upgrade machines, not people.
The gallery is NSFW
Do you want to help me upgrade my wife? Your contributions will decide what procedures my she is able to get done. Help me get her pre-child-bearing body back!

I created this web site because my wife has been considering a tummy tuck and breast augmentation for quite a few years, but neither of us knew how much it would cost. She made the appointment to see her doctor and went through the consultation. Her surgery quote from the doctor is only good for 30 days and is a whopping.

$12,750

All I need to do now is pay for it!

Science vs. Norse Mythology

oncreation.jpg

Heh.
Thanks to last week’s houseguest Aaron Long (“Well, Well, Well”) for his input on this one. He and my friend Bill Dominick (who is prone to rants) and I were discussing the efforts of various local school boards in bumfuck states to get Creationism into high school curricula on equal footing with actual science. I had recently read an article about a battle over textbooks in Pennsylvania, in which one school board member, an opponent of Inteligent Design, who you would expect to be the voice of reason, gave the following reason for her opposition: “When I hear ‘Intelligent Design,’ I think aliens.” We despaired over the state of the average American’s scientific literacy, currently at about the same level as a twelfth-century European peasant’s. Aaron likened the whole absurd and exasperating controversy to having to take Grimm’s Fairy Tales as seriously as physics. I decided to change his analogy to Norse Mythology because 1.) Grimm’s tales don’t really have a creation myth or a story about the origin of human beings and 2.) Norse mythology is so fucked up. In fact it’s so complex and contradictory that I had to cheat a little in my descriptions; although Bullfinch’s (the finest authority on all mythology, after D’Aularie’s) says Yggdrasill is rooted in three different worlds, other references have it at nine, including Hel, Midgard, the world of the dwarves, the world of the dark elves, etc., which is all much too hard to draw.
