The Retrocomputing Museum

The Retrocomputing Museum is dedicated to programs that induce sensations that hover somewhere between nostalgia and nausea — the freaks, jokes, and fossils of computing history. Our exhibits include many languages, some machine emulators, and a few games.

This is impressive. A radio controlled B52 weighing 300lbs and 8 turbines. The wingspan is 23'. There are several video clips of it flying too. I wonder if the FAA doesn't have problems with this. At what point do you need a license to fly one of these large scale models?

I love the cooking show Good Eats on the Food Network. It is always entertaining and I always learn something interesting from each show. The host, Alton Brown is answering questions this week on eGullet.com.

If you want to find out more about Good Eats, there is an excellent fan page for it. Alton Brown also has a blog.

Toddy Cold-Brewing Coffee Maker

i-toddy.jpg

I love coffee and this has me curious to how this tastes.
Want a superior tasting cup of steaming HOT coffee - coffee that's easy on your stomach yet offers a pure, bold flavor? TIME magazine says, "Caffeine connoisseurs are snapping up cold-brewing systems like the Toddy Coffee Maker."

Our patented method extracts the coffee bean's true delicious flavor, creating what The Washington Post calls "the perfect cup of coffee." According to The Saturday Evening Post, the Toddy system creates "better tasting coffee that is 67 percent less acidic than conventional hot brewed coffee and has a fuller, richer coffee flavor."

People for the Ethical Treatment of Oompa Loompas

Makes about as much sense as P.E.T.A. if you think about it.
Welcome, brothers and sisters, to the homepage for PETOL - People for the Ethical Treatment of Oompa Loompas. Oompa Loompas are a race of people from Loompa Land, which is a tiny country just south of Armenia, bordering the Caspian Sea. Loompa Land, unfortunately, is currently entailed in a horrific ethnic Civil War involving the Horn Swagglers, Rotten Vermicious Kinids, and the Swangdoodles. Of course, with Oompa Loompas generally being a peaceful race of people, they tend to get caught in the middle of the conflict and bear the brunt of the other three ethnicities' aggressions. The Oompa Loompas were beaten, tortured, and eaten by the other participants in the Great Loompa War until "salvation" came in the form of an English businessman named Willy Wonka.

At first he presents himself as God's gift to the Oompa Loompa people, giving them the opportunity to escape their war-ravaged and overly dangerous homeland for "greener pastures". Little did the Oompa Loompas realize that in Wonka talk, "greener pastures" translates directly into "slave labor". William Wonka had the Oompa Loompas' collective testicles in a vice grip.

What is an urban dig?
This site is a collection of personal objects, gathered for exhibition on line. I'm hoping that this act of posting, and individual storytelling, makes these objects much more than just products of mass production. By browsing the archive, you can view this collection by both date and category. Enjoy. And feel free to tell me what you think.

Photographs from the Chicago Daily News 1902-1933

cdn2.jpg

Superb!
This collection comprises over 55,000 images of urban life captured on glass plate negatives between 1902 and 1933 by photographers employed by the Chicago Daily News, then one of Chicago's leading newspapers. The photographs illustrate the enormous variety of topics and events covered in the newspaper, although only about twenty percent of the images in the collection were published in the newspaper. Most of the photographs were taken in Chicago, Illinois, or in nearby towns, parks, or athletic fields. In addition to many Chicagoans, the images include politicians, actors, and other prominent people who stopped in Chicago during their travels and individual athletes and sports teams who came to Chicago. Also included are photographs illustrating the operations of the Chicago Daily News itself and pictures taken on occasional out-of-town trips by the Daily News's photographers to important events, such as the inauguration of presidents in Washington, D.C.

Family Guy Quotes

Thank god they are bringing this show back.
Gun advocate: Guns don't kill people, dangerous minorities do.

Stewie's Letter: Dear stupid dog, I've gone to live with the children on jolly farm.
Good bye forever.
Stewie.
P.S. I never got a chance to return that sweater Lois gave me for Christmas. Umm, I left the receipt on top of my bureau. I'm probably over the thirty day return limit but umm… I'm sure if you make a fuss they'll at least give you a store credit or something. Umm.. It's actually not a horrible sweater. It's... It's just I can't imagine when I would ever wear it you know? Oh I also left a button on the bureau. I'm not sure what it goes to, but I can never bring myself to throw a button away. I know that as soon as I do I'll find the garment it goes to and then it'll… Wait a minute, could it be from the sweater? Did that sweater have buttons? Hmm… Well I should wrap this up before I start to ramble. Again, goodbye forever.
P.P.S. You know, it might be a little chilly in London, I'm actually going to take the sweater.

Taboo Tunes

butcher.jpg

This is a very good site with info about things that have been banned in the record industry such as The Beatles' "Butcher Cover".
The Beatles – Yesterday and Today [a.k.a. “The Butcher Cover”] The Beatles were the first band powerful enough to really challenge their label overlords. The fact that they had issued only seven LPs from 1964–'66 in England, but Capitol Records had hacked those into a more profitable ten LPs in America, rankled. The final straw was the issuance of Yesterday and Today – an album that didn’t even exist in the UK and was, in fact, cobbled together out of odds and ends: three songs from Revolver, three from Rubber Soul, two from Help!, and two from a single. Reportedly outraged that their art was being “butchered,” the Fab Four posed for this photo while wearing butcher smocks draped with cuts of meat and dismembered baby-doll parts. Infected with accute Beatlemania, Capitol apparently overlooked the questionable image and released it in June, 1966.

The Statue of Liberty moved to Madison, WI?

madStatue.jpg

I wonder if Tom Mcmahon had anything to do with this. Actually it was a college prank:
Part of a campaign promise during the elections in 1978 to bring the "Statue of Liberty to Madison" As a result of this effort the Pail and Shovel Party (Stu was one of the major masterminds) was given the Politician of the Year award for keeping the most campaign promises of any Wisconsin elected officials.

This is a collection of photos taken of ads in the New York City subway stations, for the HBO airing of the Las Vegas Britney Spears concert.

(I apologize for the not so grand quality of the photos, but you would be surprised at how difficult it is to get a decent photo in the subway. A lot of lighting obstacles and the people you have to annoy! But it was worth it...)

Sodium Party

LakeExplosion.big.t.JPG
I'd read about, and heard stories about, throwing sodium into water. It's a classic thing chemistry students do in college, and based on the reports I have been able to find on the internet, they are often drunk at the time. While anecdotal evidence would suggest that many people have thrown sodium into the lakes and streams of the world, they have been reprehensibly lax in documenting the results. I could find no reliable, and I stress the word reliable, reports on what actually happens. What reports I did find were contradictory: As you will see, I now know why.

I decided I should produce a comprehensive online reference on sodium dropping, with documentation on the size and shape of the chunks, how thrown, and most importantly with videos of the resulting explosions. To do this, I held a Sodium Party. People brought chips and soda and we had a cookout.

A Rocket Launch for International Student Satellites

The ARLISS Project is a collaborative effort between students and faculty at Stanford University Space Systems Development Program and other educational institutions, and high power rocketry enthusiasts in Northern California, to build, launch, test and recover prototype satellites, miniaturized to fit inside a soft drink can (hence "CanSats") in preparation for an Earth orbit or Mars orbit space launch.

11,500 Mile Trip on a Moped

Interesting.

In the summer of 1978 I undertook a 3-month 11,500-mile (18,660 km) journey by moped from Toronto (Ontario, Canada) to Yukon (Canada), Alaska (USA), and up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, NWT (Canada), and back to Toronto.

Web Interface for a Garage Door Opener

garage_sm.jpg

This is cool. Then again, I think just about any computer project is cool.
You're looking at the web interface to my garage door opener. A lot of people have asked me about this over the years. I built it several years ago on a whim after some items were stolen from our garage. It is an embedded Linux box interfaced to the garage doors and the garage door opener. It automatically closes the doors after a programmed amount of time.

Famous Unsolved Codes and Ciphers

awr_6vm2.jpg

This is a fascinating site. Well, it is if you are geeky like me. The above picture is from the notorious Voynich Manuscript, a small book of about 230 pages written entirely in a secret scipt.
This is an unofficial list of well-known unsolved codes and ciphers. A couple of the better-known unsolved ancient historical scripts are also thrown in, since they tend to come up during any discussion of unsolved codes. There has also been an attempt to sort this list by "fame", as defined by a loose formula involving the number of times that a particular cipher has been written about, and/or how many hits it pulls up on a moderately-sorted web search.

A Visual Record of Everything in the House

house.jpg

You want to know what it is like to have too much time on your hands? Exhibit A.
I'm slowly building up a structured, visual record of everything in my house. You're welcome to browse around while I'm working - check out the kitchen cabinets, dig through my collections, or head on down to the basement and see what you can find. You could also learn more about this site by reading the infrequent additions to the "About" section, by searching for a particular item by keyword, or you could just go directly to my underwear drawer

50 Fishy Circumstances about the Nick Berg tape

Here is an interesting article titled: Nick Berg's Killing: 50 Fishy Circumstances, Contradictory Claims, and Videotape Anomalies that is well worth the read. I think everyone knew it wouldn't be long before the conspiracy theories started up. There are just too many obfuscated details surrounding the whole ordeal. I am not buying any of these theories yet but there is definitely something fishy about the whole thing.

Childless couple told to try sex

This has to be a joke. Right?
A German couple who went to a fertility clinic after eight years of marriage have found out why they are still childless - they weren't having sex.

The University Clinic of Lubek said they had never heard of a case like it after examining the couple who went to see them last month for fertility tests.

Doctors subjected them to a series of examinations and found they were both apparently fertile, and should have had no trouble conceiving.

A clinic spokesman said: "When we asked them how often they had had sex, they looked blank, and said: "What do you mean?".

The Miniature Earth

Here is one way to put things into perspective.
If we could turn the population of the earth into a small community of 100 people, keeping the same proportions as we have today, it would be something like this.

A Thousand Beautiful Things

isla12.jpg
Beauty is all around us, yet it's often very easy to overlook it when troubles loom on a global scale, when the bank balance is frightening, when the car needs gas, when the boss is yelling. But it's the beautiful things which make us stop and catch our breath, which make us happy to be alive. Even in a time which is frequently so very ugly, beauty can still astound us with it's heartstopping splendor, and beauty -- be it everlasting or fleeting -- deserves our acknowledgement. Beautiful things deserve to be noted and held onto.

And how better in the world to capture beauty than in a photograph?

Watch me Turn 30

5.7.JPG

I am turning 30 in about 2 weeks but I am not taking a picture of myself everyday until my birthday like this girl is doing.
For my 29th birthday I received a digital camera (two, actually, but that's another story). "Perfect!" I thought. What a great way to force creativity upon myself and scrutinize my almost-30 life. The angst! The biological ticking! The fun! Thus, my blog was born.

Boycott Gillette

gillette_flint_box.jpg

I have no idea if this is true or not.
Gillette has been caught hiding tiny RFID surveillance chips in the packaging of its shaving products. These tiny, high tech spy tags are being used to trigger photo taking of unsuspecting customers!

The tracking system uses sensors hidden under Gillette shelves to detect when products are picked up. Whenever a shopper picks up a packet of razor blades from a spy shelf, SNAP! A hidden camera secretly takes a closeup photo of the shopper's face. (And a second photo is snapped at the cash register to make sure the product is paid for!)

What is an Art*o*mat?
Since 1997, Art*o*mat machines are retired cigarette vending machines that have been converted to vend art. Currently, there are 64 active machines in museums and various locations throughout the country.

What do you get from an Art*o*mat?
The experience of pulling the knob alone is quite a thrill, but you also walk away with an original work of art. Ker-plunk! What an easy way to become an art collector.

Evil Finder

This script uses a trivial engine and a small database of numerologically significant integers - dates, sacred numbers, symbols. This information is used to verify whether the subject of your choice is truly evil, perhaps the devil himself... Pick a name, thing, location, event, situation - "Bill Gates", "George Bush", "Jerry Springer" or other people you respect - and ask the script!
Here is my result:
Thus, "Chris" is 38991.
Add 71 to it - this is the symbol of domination, written backwards - you will get 39062.
Turn the number backwards, subtract 1899 - the year "Scrabble" was invented to promote violence and anger. The number is now 24194.
Subtract 1986, the year of the Chernobyl "incident". The result will be 22208.
Subtract 12 from the number - this is the symbol of the greater sin, written backwards. It gives 22196.
Turn the number backwards, subtract 1792 - the year guillotine was first used. The number is now 67330.
This, when read backwards, gives 03376. This is 1790 in octal, the year US patent system was established (eevil)...

Brutally Honest Personal Ads

Who says personal ads are all based on lies and exaggerations?
The singles below are real people with real issues. Some are overweight. Others are crippled by debt. Quite a few live with their parents. But they all have one thing in common: They are available. And they've put themselves out there with the hope of finding someone willing to accept them at face value. So, please, scan their profiles. You may not get exactly what you want, but at least you know exactly what you're getting.

The Greatest Mistakes of all Time

For trivia buffs.
Innkeeper Ruth Wakefield was baking Butter Drop Do cookies one day in the 1930s using a recipe that dated back to colonial times. She cut up a Nestlé chocolate bar and put the chunks in the batter, expecting them to melt. Wakefield thought she'd be pulling chocolate-flavored cookies out of the oven. Instead, what she got were butter cookies studded with gooey chocolate chips. Her mistake became one of the most favorite cookies of all time.
