How strong is your password?

Found this link from the Presurfer. This site will test your password and tell you how secure it is. It looks like they are just checking your password against a few of their guidelines to judge how strong your password is. Cute but I wish it was a bit more informative instead of their strength meter.

The Unabomber's life in prison

The Smoking Gun has a fascinating story about the Unabomber's time in prison. They have a ton of letters he has written, mostly complaints, about small problems in jail. The first one I read is his complaints about the mail system they have there. Here is a man who terrorized and killed people by the mail and he is complaining about the way they handle outgoing mail.

Some other highlights is his complaining about being shortchanged a 1/2 pint of milk, his fitness report, and loud neighbors. I especially liked how the missing 1/2 pint of milk turned into a 3 page correspondence.

He also receives love letters from women. I will never understand people who send letters to serial killers or anyone in prison for a high profile crime. What kind of guys are they meeting that they think to themselves, "Hmmm John is a nice guy but that Charlie Manson...WOW".

Zero Tolerance

From cnn.com.

A 14-year-old student disciplined for writing a fictional account of a student who falls asleep in class and dreams of killing a teacher is moving to another school, her father told CNN Thursday

Zero tolerance is basically saying "We are far too stupid to try to figure out what is right and what is wrong so anybody who goes near a grey area will pay the consequences". I am starting to get sick of these stories where students are being arrested or expelled because of doing a little creative writing. That is all it boils down to. There is nothing wrong with writing about anything, no matter how horrible it is. Writing about someone killing a teacher DOES NOT MEAN THAT SHE IS GOING TO KILL ANYONE!!!!

There is a gadget now for sale that is similar to what emergency vehicles have that change lights to green so they can go through. (from The Presurfer)

GDP up to 7.2%

Will be an interesting day on Wall Street since GDP looks very good for the 3rd Quarter. The question is will this be sustained? Will this lead to job creation? So far good economic news has not halted companies from laying off workers.

Armed nine year olds

Some nine year old kid was waving a toy gun around while his mom was inside getting her hair done when a cop came by, pulled his service revolver, and had the kid lie down on the ground as he arrested him. I can understand being cautious approaching someone who may be armed but the kid was nine for goodness sakes. And then why was he arrested when he found out it was a toy gun? That is what children do. They play!!. I don't think I could have grown up in this day and age. I had enough toy guns to invade a make believe "axis of evil" country.

Positive People Day Update

A friend of mine just passed me some links about positive people day. Here is the Globe's article about it. Apparently this is the sixth straight year of Positive People Day. Nancy Purbeck, optimist extraordinaire, says she wants Postive Peoople day to "rank alongside Christmas or Valentine's Day". Here is their homepage.

Victory Over Violence, Inc. is a national organization dedicated to creating a positive force in the media to offset the cynicism and negativity, which create a climate of violence. We are the creators of Positive People Day...

Oh good, I guess they solved the problem of violence in the world. These people have too much time on their hands. Getting rid of cynicism and negativity by handing out flyers? INGENIOUS. And why choose Underdog as your champion? I guess he hasn't worked in 30 years so he was free. And do you think that paying someone a compliment is going to stop violence? Where are these people from?

Be sure to look up in the sky tonight if you have clear skies. The tremendous solar flare should make for some really nice aurora. It will be interesting to see how well communication satellites will work later in the day.

George Steinbrenner arrived at the Yankees' minor-league complex in Tampa yesterday at 9 a.m. and fired the first low-level staffer who came in the door after him. From the NY Post.

Mission Accomplished..... NOT!

The press is all over the Mission Accomplished Banner that was on the aircraft carrier where Bush landed when he gave his "Its over" speech. Well, now considering all of the casualties that are still being inflicted to US troops in Iraq, Bush is trying to distance himself from the whole carrier public relations stunt including the banner. He says that it was the Navy's idea and that it was referencing their particular mission. Here is Salon's article about it. Here is Cnn's article about it. I don't really care too much about the banner. I resent that Bush thinks we are that stupid to think that he didn't have any control about the banner. They had control over everything on that aircraft carrier so don't tell me you didn't realize there was a huge banner on the bridge of the ship. The whole speech was about how we had accomplished our mission in Iraq. Stop blaming the Navy for your mistakes.

Bush says attacks in Iraq are a sign of progress

President "Bring them on" Bush is saying that the attacks going on in Iraq are a sign of how much progress we are making in Iraq.

It doesn't look like desperation to me. The brazen attack on the hotel this weekend where Wolfowitz was staying looks more like a statement. The scary part is that I am beginning to think that Bush is buying into his own lies now. It happens. You start repeating a line and after enough time you start to buy into it yourself.

Grady Little

Red Sox management formally declined to renew Grady Little's contract yesterday. I think it was really the only move that they could have made. It would have been difficult to sell him as their manager for the next few years after what happened in Game 7 of this year's ALCS. Some people think that he shouldn't have been judged by that one decision. I think he botched alot of decisions through the season and playoffs. The decision he made to keep Pedro Martinez out on the mound when he was obviously exhausted was simply one of the worst decisions ever made in professional sports. Careers are made and destroyed on the basis of KEY decisions. He had to go.

Liza Minelli, Man-beater

Liza Minelli's ex-husband, David Gest is suing her for 10 million dollars for physically abusing him since their marriage.

1. Other than Michael Jackson, is there a weirder looking guy in the world?

2. I am sure that there have been men abused physically in a relationship before, but Liza Minelli is 57 and doesn't look like she can open an envelope, never mind hurting anyone.

3. I mean look at him!!! I have seen mannequins more lifelike!!

Terri Schiavo Case

I was sick yesterday and stuck watching news in bed so I saw alot about this case. The Florida Legistlature approved a measure allowing Gov. Jeb Bush to order Teri Schiavo's feeding tube to be put back in. Here is the story from cnn.

A few thoughts. Obviously this is a tough situation no matter which way you look at it. The way I look at it is that it has been 13 years this woman has been in a vegitative state. 13!!. This didn't happen a few months ago or even a few years ago. I understand how the parents don't want to admit it but Terri Shiavo is dead. All that remains to her is an empty shell. Her body is being kept alive by machines and that is certainly no way to live. I would doubt that anyone who is happy about the decision to keep her alive has had anyone who is going through what the husband and parents are going through.

For the record, if blogs are admissible in court and I end up in a state similar to Terri Schiavo, I would hope that my loved ones would have the courage to pull the plug. Life isn't worth living in that condition.

Drug Testing for High School Students

The Boston Globe is reporting that they might be starting a voluntary(meaning the student's parents) drug testing program in New Bedford for high school students.

I like this part of the article...

Only the parent of the tested student would see the results. School officials would collect anonymous statistics.

YEAH RIGHT!! Hey, how about giving money to schools for teachers, books and larger classrooms. When did they start treating students like convicts??

Subway Musicians

I have nothing against subway musicians. Some are actually quite good. But if you are a musician who likes to play in the subway, where people are forced to listen to your music until the train comes, maybe you should do it at a reasonable hour. I am not saying I dislike listening to music at 8am on a Monday morning. But the guy at South Station today playing some type of avant garde music on a guitar with a huge amp might have been a bit much.

Curses

Like everyone else in Boston right now, I am tired and speechless. I can't speak for anyone else but the worst part of a sox collapse(and cubs collapse for that matter) is that we will have to deal with this silly talk of "the curse". The curse did not have anything to do with the loss last night. It was a poor managerial decision that cost us the game. Was there anyone who actually thought that Pedro should have stayed in the 8th inning after giving up two hits? Absolutely one of the worst managerial calls I have ever seen. EVER!!

With that being said though I must admit that the old saying around here how the Sox will get you very very close just to break your heart, still seems to apply here.

Brain Transplants

Sick of your body? For just $499,000.00 you can have your brain transplanted to a new, younger, and more fit body. I can't really tell if this website is a joke or just a con so you can decide. When Big Hair goes Bad

I really could care less about Siegfried and Roy and their silly act but when their manager starts calling Roy "heroic", I might have to speak up. The manager is blaming a woman in the audience with big hair for causing the tiger to start an attack. Roy jumped in front of the tiger and the woman and that is why he was dragged off like a rag doll. Right. I don't think I am going to be buying that one.

DMCA Strikes Again

I made fun of it on Wednesday, but it looks like the Princeton student who broke the encryption used for copy protecting cds might be sued by SunnComm, the company that created the encryption software. Furthermore, they also claim that he violated criminal provisions of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act by doing this.

The way I see it, there is no excuse for coming up with an encryption scheme that can be defeated using the shift key. Hiding behind the DMCA instead of acutally coming up with an encryption scheme that works makes them look incompetent. Engineers should be innovative in their designs and not have to hide behind silly laws.

CD Copy Protection Broken... again

A Princeton PhD student broke the encryption used in cds.

The copy-protection mechanism in question is SunnComm's MediaMax CD3 system. Launched in September, the company claimed its technology had passed strict testing to Recording Industry Ass. of America (RIAA) copy-protection standards with "flying colours".

The "comprehensive test procedures" - SunnComm's words - were performed by "world-renowned" Professional Multimedia Test Centre (PMTC), based in Belgium. PMTC Division Manager Frans Pender is quoted by SunnComm as saying MediaMax C3 offered " an incredible level of security for the music".

How did this modern day Alan Turing break the encryption? He used the shift key!

Here is his paper describing how he did it.

50 Reasons not to vote for Arnold

I could care less about California but I think it is hysterical that people are actually taking Schwarzenegger seriously. Presidential Poems

I posted this on Saturday but I still don't have the database up and I lost this weekend's posts. President Bush has taken to writing poems to his wife.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Oh my, lump in the bed
How I've missed you.

Roses are redder
Bluer am I
Seeing you kissed by that charming French guy
The dogs and the cat, they missed you too
Barney's still mad you dropped him, he ate your shoe

The distance, my dear, has been such a barrier
Next time you want an adventure, just land on a carrier.

Ok, I don't expect the president to be Walt Whitman but does he have to sound like a drooling idiot?

Rant du Jour

This goes out to the genius on the redline this morning. If the T is packed and you happen to bring a baby carriage on board, then when people are trying to get out you should go out of the train and allow people to get off instead of pushing into the crowd causing more problems. What an idiot!!

Playoffs!!

sox.gifGO SOX

Ahhh October is here and my beloved Red Sox are in the playoffs for the first since '99. Unfortunately the game is on at 10pm tonight. 10pm!!! Why in the world is it on that late? I understand that tonight's game is in Oakland but still. It would have made more sense for it to start at 9pm at least so that people on Pacific Time could get home from work and watch it and those of us on EST could get to bed at a reasonable time.

If you think the start time is bad, I am dreading the announcers also. I can already picture the pregame show and how many times they will mention the curse of the bambino. Enough already!!

Here are the questions in no particular order I have about the Sox going into tonight's game.

  • Will the lack of having any relief pitching kill them at the end of close games? I hate the idea of clinging to a 1 run lead and seeing Kim come running from the bullpen.

  • Will it the old adage hold up that good pitching beats good hitting? There really are no weak links in the Sox lineup. None.

  • Six players on the team have 25 or more homeruns. Six! Eight players have more than 80 runs batted in! Is there a pitcher in baseball that would want to pitch to this team? Imagine Tim Hudson getting to the bottom of the order and have to deal with Varitek and Nixon or whoever Grady bats down there?

  • Will Manny be able to hit in the post season finally? Will Nomar's slump continue?

I guess most of these questions will be answered by 1am tomorrow morning. GO SOX!!

Playoffs!!

sox.gifGO SOX Ahhh October is here and my beloved Red Sox are in the playoffs for the first since '99.
