Suspicious Looking Device

For those looking for an all paid trip to Guantanamo Bay:

The only function of the Suspicious Looking device is to appear as suspicious as possible, whether carried in hand or placed indiscrimately in public places.

The SLD contains LEDs, a LED array, a character display, an optical distance sensor, capacitive touch sensor, buzzer, and motors.

  1. McGee,

Idiotic. If you take this out in public, you deserve to be arrested.

There’s a difference between fighting against hysteria and actually trying to stir it up. The Aqua Teen thing was a simple mistake – this is just stupidity. If your whole goal is to make a device that looks suspicious, you’re an idiot, especially if you end up wasting the time of police officers whose time is better spent elsewhere.

  2. Eel Feather,

You’re right, but you’re also wrong.

You’re right in the sense that doing so could be compared to pulling the fire alarm, as a prank.

But you’re wrong in the sense that a “suspicious device” by definition is any device that any person might consider suspicious. Couple that with the fact that a lot of people are suspicious anything they don’t understand — and that a lot of people don’t understand too many thing, and you’re stuck with that whole lowest-common denominator situation…

  3. gorckat,

It would be more suspicious if it were put together with 1/2″ pipe for the handle, heavy gauge sheet metal body and more ‘pipe-bomby’ in general.

To me, with several years prior HVAC experince- I was trying to name it because it looked familiar- kind of vacuum pump-like.

  4. Schmoo,

Spot on, Eel. The concept is amusing, but using it as suggested wouldn’t be. A bit like Joe Cartoon’s frog in a blender :)

  5. fluff,

Well; histeria seems to be around everywhere now. I think this device just is a wonderful piece of contemporary art. And it’s certainly a laugh. Tell me of a bomb that buzzes when touched and then tries to escape? Comeon people. That thing is wonderful!

  6. Jimmy,

Isn’t that an old Geiger counter?

  7. Eel Feather,

A bit like Joe Cartoon’s frog in a blender

To paraphrase The Dude — “Well, you’re obviously not a golf- er, artiste!”

They already did that, for real — except with fish, rather than a frog. Little blender aquariums. Plugged in. I guess it was as much of a social experiment, as a work of art… Danish people are every bit as wonderful and horrible as most other groups of people, so obviously, someone did push the button on the blenders, and obviously, people got up in arms over it. Interactive art and humanity at its finest.

  8. Daniel,

I wish people would just lighten the hell up…..What’s wrong with a bit of hysteria? It’s a total crack-up!

  9. Gwenny,

looks like a Geiger Counter to me…I think most folks would know that…

  10. Fred,

Either a Geiger counter or a spirit containement unit, a la Ghostbusters.

  11. Dan,

    I know who I’M gonna call…..

  12. outeast,

Fred beat me to it. I saw it and knew at once what it was. Geiger counter my arse.

  13. Dan,

Yeah, it’s DEFINITELY a spirit containment unit..

  14. Yogiberen,

Um, excuse me… but it’s and Ecto-Plasmatic Spirit containment unit. Thank you very much =)
