Veto of the Day

HA!

The California Assembly and Senate recently unanimously approved Assembly Bill 1176 to help the port of San Francisco with financing issues. But Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has decided to veto the legislation, sending a letter to the state Assembly chastising them for focusing on “unnecessary bills.” The San Francisco Bay Guardian also notes a second, more direct, message hidden in Schwarzenegger’s missive — contained in the first letter of each line:

  1. McGee,

There is absolutely no way that’s an accident.

  2. Julia S.,

please tell me this is for real….

  3. Piri,

Is this for real?! Please please please please

  4. Inti,

Schwarzenegger’s office, however, is insisting that the letter’s coded message was just “a strange coincidence.” “When you do so many vetoes, that’s bound to happen,”

    Of course, of course…

  5. SWEET!!!! I am so doing that in my next memo to my boss!

  6. Mark,

Must be real. Here is the link from the gov.ca.gov web site.

  7. Kodie,

“kicks the can down the alley” doesn’t sound like an accidental choice of phrase. Who says that anymore (did anyone say that ever?)? Maybe I just think it sounds unnatural for the characters “Ahnold” has played in movies and he really talks like that all the time, or got it from Maria. Perhaps someone punched up the official statement a bit – saw an opening and went with it. It is hilarious though.

  8. cookmefud,

I have so much more respect for Arnold now.

  9. AmandaNZ,

I love that mainstream media outlets are running with this story, because I’m sure they’re only doing it for a chance to legally say “fuck” on air/in print.

  10. lumpi,

    Now that I think
of it, I’m pretty sure it is a coincidence.

When you write so many letters
all day, it ought to happen one time,
    yet I am still skeptical.

  11. Not that I think it’s a coincidence but
it could be, you never know.
Can they prove he did it? No, but
everyone probably thinks it was on purpose.

  12. jon,

The chances of this being coincidence seems astronomically small. If you consider all 7-line messages, lets pretend that the likelihood of the first letter of each line being the correct one are about 1/10 (at worst it’s 1/26, but some letters are more likely than others, so this is a gross approximation), that’s 1 in 10,000,0000.

  13. yazzwho,

My response to this accusation would be worded something like: “I categorically deny inserting a code message in my letter. Writing something like that would be BeLOW ME.”

    Have a nice day, Ahhhnorld…
