They were paid in US$, but they said that the natives (who were paid in local currency) never kept much cash around. Due to inflation, something that cost X today could have been 1.5X a month from now. So upon receiving any sizeable amount of cash, they immediately bought tangible goods like a TV or washing machine – even though they didn’t need one – for later barter.
