  1. Michael,

collapsible steering column makes a big difference, eh?

  2. Lydi-Rae,

I am strangely disappointed in the Bel-Air.

But I could watch crash tests all day.

  3. buffalo,

Why would they do that to such a beautiful car? At least use a crappy one.

  4. MaTa,

That’ll buff right out. .. no worries

  5. LL,

Makes me rethink my desire to get a 1950’s or earlier car.

  6. I always thought of those old boats as fairly safe, almost tank-like. I’m amazed that it just crumpled like that.

  7. MnM,

I love the fuzzy dice in the Bel-Air. Nice touch.

  8. If cars are more safe now why are speed limits the same?

  9. ambisinister,

Anyone want to see what happens when you crash a Volvo 940 into a supermini? Fifth gear did a similar crash at 40mph, not pretty.

  10. Ninabi,

Wow. The “They don’t make ‘em like they used to” phrase takes on new meaning. Glad they don’t.

Love watching these crash videos. What a surprise.

  11. Rampage_Rick,

    @tyler

Possibly because safety is only one facet of speed limits. National speed limits were implemented by Nixon during the ’70s oil crisis. I’m sure they figured out pretty quickly how much of a cash cow it was to hand out speeding tickets. Like they’ll ever stop milking that one… (At least until we get the cool cars from I, Robot that do ~130mph in the city)

In a similar vein, smoking kills, but damned if the government doesn’t make heaps of money from taxing it. If only they’d take the same attitude with marijuana. I’m not a smoker of either kind, but damned if I don’t find the whole war on drugs a hypocritical farce. Like the man said, “the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over again and expect different results.” Remember prohibition, Al Capone, etc?
