Cellist Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach In Shadow Of Border Crossing

Yo-Yo Ma is just always amazing:

World-class cellist Yo-Yo Ma played part of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cello suites on Saturday at the U.S.-Mexico border to use culture and the arts as a way to “build bridges, not walls” between the two countries.

After reading these words from Emma Lazarus’ poem…

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

…he told the audience, “A country is not a hotel and it’s not ‘full.” That was a direct rebuke to Trump’s recent claim that the country is full and we can’t take any more.

“As you all know, as you did and do and will do, in culture, we build bridges, not walls,” he told the audience.

Heartbroken about Notre Dame

That picture of the cathedral is from my last trip to Paris last year. I’ve been in Notre Dame once on my first trip. It’s a stunning work of architecture that was started in 1160. I’m not religious and it didn’t speak to me on a spiritual level, but always touched me on an artistic and historic level whenever I would pass by. It’s just a sad day to see her engulfed in flames. I hope that there were no injuries and that the walls and facade are able to be saved. The spire falling is just terribly sad.

(I deleted a post about my travel plans to Ireland for now. It didn’t seem right keeping that post up as Notre Dame is burning.)

Notre Dame is on Fire

Update:

This looks really bad:

Trump told CBP head he’d pardon him if he were sent to jail for violating immigration law

I haven’t been posting Trump stuff lately because there is no bottom to his corruption and lies, but this is really something else:

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump told Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan he would grant McAleenan a pardon if he were sent to jail for having border agents block asylum seekers from entering the US in defiance of US law, senior administration officials tell CNN.

Trump reportedly made the comment during a visit to the border at Calexico, California, a week ago. It was not clear if the comment was a joke.

Two officials briefed on the exchange say the President told McAleenan, since named the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, that he “would pardon him if he ever went to jail for denying US entry to migrants,” as one of the officials paraphrased.

The White House referred CNN to the Department of Homeland Security. A DHS spokesman told CNN, “At no time has the President indicated, asked, directed or pressured the Acting Secretary to do anything illegal. Nor would the Acting Secretary take actions that are not in accordance with our responsibility to enforce the law.”

Trump doesn’t joke. He says ridiculous things and people around him may laugh believing it to be a joke, but the man has no sense of humor and says what he means.
