What a disaster this is going to turn out to be for Brazil:
SAO PAULO (AP) — Newly installed President Jair Bolsonaro targeted Brazil’s indigenous groups, descendants of slaves and the LGBT community with executive orders in the first hours of his administration, moving quickly after a campaign in which the far-right leader said he would radically overhaul many aspects of life in Latin America’s largest nation.
Sao Paulo’s stock market, meanwhile, jumped 3.56 percent to a record closing of 91,012 points as new Cabinet ministers reinforced the intent to privatize state-owned companies and a Brazilian arms maker benefited from Bolsonaro’s plans to loosen gun controls. Similar spikes in stock prices also occurred during the presidential campaign.
One of the orders issued late Tuesday, hours after Bolsonaro’s inauguration, likely will make it all but impossible for new lands to be identified and demarcated for indigenous communities. Areas set aside for “Quilombolas,” as descendants of former slaves are known, are also affected by the decision.
I tuned in a bit late but caught the tail end of Trump’s cabinet meeting where he is acting more disturbed than ever.
Daniel Dale’s twitter thread has a run down of some of the crazier moments:
This fucking guy:
Disgraced comedian Louis C.K. has stirred more outrage after taking aim at Parkland shooting survivors and gender identity concerns in a recent set at a comedy club on Long Island.
A 48-minute audio recording of C.K. surfaced late Sunday on YouTube. It was described as a set delivered Dec. 16 at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown.
C.K. starts the set by noting that he’s had a rough time in the 14 months since multiple women came forward accusing him of sexual harassment and misconduct. C.K. acknowledged the truth of the claims made in a New York Times expose in November 2017.
“Ever have an entire year that sucks 365 s— c— days in a row?” C.K. asks the crowd.
Among C.K.’s most incendiary comments are aimed at the survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting last February that left 17 people dead in Parkland, Fla. C.K. said he was generally unimpressed by the younger generation now that he is 51, calling them “boring.”
What a creep. In every sense of the word. I’m all for giving people a second chance but he doesn’t seem like he has learned anything and is now just playing the victim card and running to the side of the room to the nutcases who will accept him as is. Fuck him. He’s dead to me.
I’m not really big into New Year’s resolutions. I usually set goals and evaluate all during the year anyway. But people seem to love the idea of a fresh slate to start things so whatever works.
But that being said what is something new that you would like to do for the year?
I want to learn how to sketch/draw. I’ve always been horrible at sketching. To be completely honest though, I’ve never really given it much of a try. So I thought I would start working on that. I’ve been watching a few YouTube series and have a few books from the library. I’m finding it to be fairly relaxing despite having to cobble together online lessons. (But I’ve always found that to be part of the fun.)
I think she’s the first major candidate to toss her hat into the ring for 2020. At least from what I know. It’s too early for me to put much stock into any early analysis of her chances, etc, so I’ll just see what happens. But she’s my Senator, and a good one at that. I have voted for her twice now for Senate and would gladly vote for her to be President. Although, at the moment I would vote for a coat rack to be President over who we have now.
But prepare for the rampant sexist attacks on her from now until 2020.
