Question of the Night

What are your distractions from Trump destroying the world?

I picked up a new game for PS4. Well, a new game for me at least. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It’s a fine game. Not too addictive but just enough fun to take my mind off of anything going on in the world for an hour or two. I wish there weren’t so many cut scenes though. But the storyline is fine.

So that. And alcohol. It doesn’t make anything better but it slows the descent into madness. Or increases it. I don’t know.

  1. I know it’s going to sound corny, but my husband.

We got married four days before the election, and I don’t know how I would have held it together on election day (or in the months since) without him.

I have been drinking more, too.

    1. Not sure if that’s corny though. I think the only thing that gets me through the day is my loved ones. It’s when we have reached wits end that they are more valuable than money or anything of value. And with Trump in office, more days or not, by the end of the day we are at our wit’s end. So our loved ones are most important….

      And booze.

      1. I’ll also plug this other site where I’ve been spending a lot of time, and I think you might enjoy, too.

The Avocado is a spinoff of the AV Club’s commenters, especially since the latter switched to a new commenting system.

Anyway, they’re great folks, and they’ve helped keep me sane over the last year or more.

  2. Lately it’s been my immersion in school and the time I spend in my classes focusing on the topic; and talking to my classmates while we work on our group projects. I only have two classes per week so I also spend some time drawing while I have Netflix running in the background. Lately I’m trying to ink the maps of all the regions in the book The Phantom Tollbooth, which is a great distraction because focusing on all the skinny little ink lines is great. My third thing is that now I also workout every day switching between running and heavy gymnastics (depending on the day). When I do the gymnastic routines I swear a LOT which helps me get through it.

I feel like I’ve been swallowing my emotions though and just masking how I really feel. I fantasize about meeting my political heroes and instantly breaking down into a bucket of tears.

  3. Don’t do what I’ve been doing the last week, which is re-reading The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s a fantastic book but HOO BOY. It reads a lot less like fiction these days than it did when I read it in high school, when it first came out.

I have a group text with some of my sisters and nieces, that’s been going on for a couple years now. We talk about big and little things, and also do a lot of venting about Trump. It’s good to have a group of people to commiserate with. And share pictures of baby animals in hats, like you do.

  4. Knitting. Losing myself in books.

And comedy. Thank Ingersoll for Samantha Bee, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and you, Chris.

I’m sort of afraid to start hitting the gin…I’m afraid I might not stop.

(Speaking of books, I highly, highly recommend Jane Smiley’s trilogy – Some Luck, Early Warning, and Golden Age.)

  5. Games mostly and movies, If you like puzzle games The Witness is one of the best ever made, Is frustratingly difficult at places and was all i thought about for months after playing it.

I still go back and walk around its virtual world sometimes

  6. Drinking more lately, and doing more creative things, like Inktober and NaNoWriMo (I’m just planning that second one.)
I also got moved to a full-time position since the election, so I guess I’m doing my part to un-fuck the planet via the educational system.
