Donald J. Trump ceased being President of the United States today at about 4:13pm Eastern Time. That was when he said into the microphones, “I will tell you something: I watched those very closely — much more closely than you people watched it — and you had a group on one side that was bad, and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. And nobody wants to say that, but I’ll say it right now. You had a group— You had a group on the other side that came charging in without a permit, and they were very, very violent.”
That was the very moment when he decided to push all of his remaining chips in on the white nationalists. It’s not very hard to disavow white nationalists. It’s not even controversial. People who admit that they have never watched an episode of Game of Thrones get more heat than people who say racists suck! But he couldn’t say it. David Duke and other white nationalists/kkk members/nazi fucktards are all proud of him for his performance at his press conference today. Even if in his heart he isn’t a racist, it really doesn’t matter anymore, does it?
As President of the United States, he represents a diverse population. Trump sent a clear message today that there is only one type of citizen that he is willing to lead. A white member of the alt-right. Everybody else is just in his way.
None of this should be a surprise. There was no evidence during his campaign, nor during his celebrity prior to that, which illustrated that he could responsibly lead a company selling shitty steaks, let alone an entire country. It shouldn’t be a surprise that he attacks despots who may have nuclear missiles on twitter the same way that an upset customer tweets back at Chipotle for a burrito that didn’t have enough guacamole. This is who he was, this is who he is, and this is who he will always be.
His Administration as been nothing but disasters that are temporarily resolved by the revelations of further disasters. To put things in perspective, last week we were all concerned about Global Nuclear annihilation. We’ve barely heard a peep about nuclear holocaust this week because Trump managed to take a mid-twentieth century horror and replace it with a mid-nineteenth century horror. We’re slowly reliving our country’s past one tragedy at a time. We’ve had stupid Watergate that was eclipsed by dumb-as-fuck Cuban Missile Crisis which has now been lapped by WHAT-THE-FUCK-Is-Going-On KKK rally. I’m at the point that I’m hoping for a slow weekend of a Petulant Petticoat Affair to bridge the gap between Oh-Just-Kill-Me-Already 2nd American Revolution. Because that’s the course we seem to be heading down.
The only refreshing thing I can say about Trump is that he doesn’t use the podium to speak code to his base. Who needs a dog whistle when you can hook a megaphone up to Spinal Tap’s amp and crank it to 11? The only sliver of joy I can find in any of this, and I’m REALLY searching now, is that some aide who meticulously crafted a script for Trump to read on Monday is probably in the hospital with an embolism after Trump’s press conference today. I have no sympathy for anybody who has hitched their wagon to the Trump train at this point. Spicer, Scaramucci, Kelly, McConnell, Ryan, GOP House and Senate, you all knew what you were getting into.
I no longer think Trump will finish his term. He has just burned too many bridges, angered too many people. People with information who will keep leaking damaging information on Trump. The only question I have left is how will it end and how much damage will he do to us as he furiously struggles to keep his office. He won’t go silently into the night like Nixon. Trump has no allegiances besides himself and maybe Ivanka. He won’t care about trying to salvage the GOP. If anything, he will try to take them down with him if he senses that they have turned on him.
Where do we go from here?
