Police Say 7-Year-Old Accidentally Shot By Neighbor While Swimming

From Talking Points Memo:

A 7-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet Tuesday in Tekonsha, Mich. while swimming in her backyard pool, TV station WWMT reported.

Michigan State Police told the news station that the girl’s neighbor, who had a concealed weapons permit, was using a 9 mm handgun for target practice in a nearby field. They said a stray bullet traveled at least 200 yards across the field before hitting the 7-year-old in the arm as she stood beside the pool.

  1. So firing a gun at a target, missing the target and hitting something else is an accident.

I used to tell my kids when I found them throwing a baseball to each other near a window, “You need to move farther away from the house. You’re going to break a window.” If they ignored my warning and broke the window with the ball, they were punished. Because even though they didn’t mean to break the window, they should have known better.
