Woman’s Death From 30-year-old Bullet Wound Ruled Homicide

From WFMZ.com:

A woman has died more than 30 years after being shot during an attempted robbery, and the coroner has ruled her death a homicide.

Linda J. Knauss died at Lehigh Valley Hospital last week of complications from the wound she suffered during an attempted holdup outside a boutique on Locust Street in Harrisburg on the evening of Apr. 12, 1982, the Lehigh County coroner said.

The cause of Knauss’ death almost went unnoticed, officials said. The Orefield, Lehigh Co., woman was due to be cremated before investigators in the coroner’s office received the paperwork and started digging.

  1. Lurker111,

Oh boy. That means if they knew the perpetrator from the 1982 attack, he or she would now be subject to a felony murder charge.

    UNLESS double jeopardy attaches.

What a mess. Would love to see a follow-up if anyone notices.

    • d,

Given that the charges would be homocide-related (likely manslaughter), it would be impossible for this to fall under double jeopardy as [s]he had not been charged with this woman’s murder before…right?

  2. turnwrench,

I’m assuming she was treated for this gunshot wound 30 years ago, because the shooting was reported. Shouldn’t it be medical malpractice? Or did she just tell the ambulance “No thanks, I’ll just walk it off.”

    • gorckat,

Not likely malpractice…any time a person dies of a gunshot (or knife or hammer or whatever) complications directly resulting from the wound, it gets classed homicide.

I think it was something to do with FBI stats and how it can cause prior years homicide numbers to increase.

      • turnwrench,

I can see that, and I’m not backing up the attacker, but I think 30 years of regular life would separate the gunshot and the death.
