They Will Know We are Christians By Our Shitty Tipping

From The Smoking Gun:

JANUARY 31–The St. Louis pastor responsible for the credit card receipt heard ‘round the Internet termed her snide scribblings a “lapse in my character and judgment,” adding that the Applebee’s employee who posted the receipt online was fired yesterday after she lodged a complaint with restaurant managers.

In a TSG interview, Alois Bell said that the online firestorm created by the receipt has left her stunned. “My heart is really broken,” said the 37-year-old Bell. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”

The Applebee’s receipt, which was posted earlier this week to Reddit, includes Bell’s handwritten notations referring to an 18 percent tip added to the bill (for groups larger than six). “I give God 10% why do you get 18,” wrote Bell, who scratched out the tip and added a zero in its place. She also wrote the word “Pastor” above her signature.

The January 25 meal came after an evening service at the Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries church, said Bell, who added that five adults and five children were in the group that dined at Applebee’s (a traditional post-service destination for church members). The subsequent bill was divided up amongst the parties.

  1. The server gets 18 because they work their ass off for a crappy company in a crappy industry that’s allowed to underpay their workers. The 18 is supposed to prevent them from being stiffed by people who’s ‘job’ is to sit around and bullshit other people and who don’t work.
You should ask god why he gets any percent at all. Why would he need money? To help poor people who get stiffed at their jobs?

  2. The latest news is that the pastor, embarrassed by the scandal, called Applebee’s to have everyone fired. Now, a waitress who was stiffed on the tip has lost her job.

    1. It wasn’t the table’s server that was fired. But still…

“Chelsea tells Consumerist that the receipt was actually not even for her table. Rather, the server on the receiving end of the note showed it to Chelsea, who snapped a photo of it later that night.”

      1. (I hit reply too early) What a selectively arrogant cheapskate. What if she decided not to pay Applebees’ bill for that reason? Would they just accept it? Well no, they’d call the cops.

  3. I’m not sure I understand why she got fired. Did she get canned for lodging a complaint leading to them thinking she’s a “troublemaker”? Did he leave a shitty note and then call the restaurant and get her fired for wanting a tip?

    1. the article i read said that the waitress violated the customer’s privacy because she posted a pic where the signature was visible. the “pastor” claims several people who know her recognized her sig and now her reputation is ruined. Basically, she did something shittyy and she’s just pissed cause she got caught so now the waitress suffers.

  4. My daughter once worked at American Girl in NYC. After a big birthday party for a mob of little girls, she noticed two things–the parents had left their digital camera on the table after they’d departed, and they had left no tip. As the restaurant had recently changed its policy from automatic gratuity to regular tipping, she assumed the parents didn’t realize they had stiffed her. She ran down the street after them, found them, gave them their camera back and mentioned the tip policy had changed. They had her fired.

  5. I’m against tipping as a substitute for reasonable wages, I think it should be done as a means of complementing services rendered rather than as a de-facto service tax. That said, I tip 20% on average service on the rare occasions I eat at a place where I’m served, just because I don’t agree with it doesn’t mean I’m going to stiff someone who depends on that income. I’d love to see Applebee’s get some serious blowback from this though, even if posting someone’s check online is morally in the grey it’s fair play given the smugness of the stiffing.

  6. Too bad there’s no Applebee’s around here for me to boycott. My middle daughter was once a waitress, (she’s an artist) and has some disgusting stories about large parties stiffing her or another server. I, too, always tip at least 20% even though I live on a small pension and what I get from dogstting.

  7. Her logic is pretty backwards… If you’re willing to give 10% to something fictional, then a real live person should get loads more.

  8. When I was younger I would go out to eat at the local coffee shop. I went a few times a week and got the same thing every time. I tipped well 20%-30%because I loved the little place and after going there so many times, the people got to know me and would serve my food up before someone who got there and ordered before me, I also had a simple order so it was not difficult to do but it was still nice. Often times, I would get a free slice of pie because I was a preferred customer!

I love that little coffee shop and I try and go whenever I can make it back into town.

  9. My mom, who is both an ordained minister and a former waitress, would have chewed that pastor a new one. To paraphrase Matthew 25:35 “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. God will reply, “Truly, what you did for the least of my children, you did for me.” Thanks, sucker. but I ain’t helpin’ you with the rent.

  10. Lets not portray the waitress as some victim who is barely making a living. The other 4 parties paid the minimum tip, some paid extra. Also allegedly, the “pastor” was charged the $6 tip anyhow. She got paid somewhere $24-40 for that table. Not bad for bring out some food, topping their drinks, and smiling.

She claims to make $9/hour which is not bad for unskilled labor. However if she claims to make $9/hour she probably makes more like $18/hour. She is going to lower her wages for the story and a large chunk of her tips goes unreported.

So (maybe) she gets one crappy tipper. Over all the good tippers more than make up for the handful of bad tippers. Most of the bad tippers are not assholes like this lady, but just unsatisfied customers.
