Officer at center of pepper-spraying incident no longer works at UC Davis

From The Sacramento Bee:

“Consistent with privacy guidelines established in state law and university policy, I can confirm that John Pike’s employment with the university ended on July 31, 2012,” Shiller said. “I’m unable to comment further.”

Pike, 39, declined to comment when reached by The Bee as he was sitting in a meeting on campus where he said he was being terminated.

Pike’s 2010 salary was listed as $110,243.12. He has been on paid leave since the debacle unfolded last year, sparking worldwide outrage, numerous investigations and calls for the resignation of UC Davis leaders.

Pike’s leave coincided with an internal affairs investigation into his and other officers’ actions on the campus quad Nov. 18, when Pike and at least one other officer used pepper spray on students and protesters who were seated and had locked arms, refusing police orders to disperse.

  2. LL,

How does a glorified security guard make $110K a year?

    • Jason T,

I found myself asking that same question. Maybe he pulls extra duties like instructing and/or his experience level?

    • Cornjob,

      In President-Elect Romney’s world they’ll make $350K a year. What happens then?!?

    • Danno,

Usually when they release that figure it includes the fully burdened salary which includes any medical benefits, retirement contributions etc… It’s not just his take home salary.

      • Bacopa,

Thanks. That makes sense. I couldn’t figure out how a university cop, no matter how high ranking, at a mid sized school could make a little more than a department head in a big city police force.

  3. ange,

I was wondering how he could possibly pull that salary too. My dad was a cop in a shitty town in NJ for the longest time and he made total shit. This dude walks a campus and makes over 100k?

    • Bacopa,

This is about the same pay as division (homicide, arson, etc) leaders make in the Houston Police Department. I am sure they have a lot more to do.

BTW, detective M., I am still willing to testify if you catch that guy.

They don’t say his rank, but if he was a if he was a Sergeant I’m sure we’d have heard all the Pepper jokes by now….

That pic is my favorite thing today. I thank you for that.

Oh yeah, today’s pig is tomorrow’s bacon and all that.

  6. Mike K,

I think what people found most troubling about this, more than the fact that he pepper sprayed people that were actually doing nothing more than trespassing, was the casualness with which he did it. He looked like he was just spraying his lawn for weeds. In his mind, maybe he was, if only metaphorically.

    • Jason T,

You should check out the vids of right after when the crowd started chanting “Shame on you.” and were closing in on all the officers. The officers started falling back and Pike actually looked dejected as if he couldn’t understand why they were reacting that way.

  7. FlamingAtheist,

And meanwhile, my spouse works as a dedicated public university adviser guiding the education of students and her total comp is less than half of this guy. AMERICA!

I know what you mean. The highest paid state employee in Texas is the UT football coach. He makes more money than Steven Weinberg, a Nobel laureate who has taught at UT for many years.
