Its called an SRO, a lot of them are downtown (below 168th street) and charge about 1k to 2k a month. The shared bathroom is shared with the entire floor (at least 9 other apartments) and is usually pretty gross. Most people who rent those stay maybe a year or two because they’re usually students or only there for a short while.
I wonder if the room was always that small, or if the landlord split larger apartments into smaller ones to make more money. The “false door” is a good indicator of that. Also possible that the building wasn’t always apartments and his room is a revamped utility closet. Regardless, I’d go bat-shit crazy living in a place that small – and that’s where he works too!
