He indicated that he thought it was going to pass right over him and he didn’t seem worried about that.

He got some good video though. He blew it at the end by not getting video of the tornado after it went by.

He had plenty of options, the best thing to do would have been to drive at right angles to the tornado.

If his vehicle was hit by the tornado it probably would have been flipped. He may have been hit by flying debris and injured.

Tornadoes speed can range anywhere from stationary up to about 60 mph or so. Outrunning one in a car is not a problem as long as you have road and that road isn’t blocked. However, the normal procedure is to drive at right angles to the tornado and let it go by.

If that was not an option and you were on an open road you could outrun it as long as you didn’t run out of road.

At times, his attitude was that what he was experiencing was “just another day” in Tornadoville. I don’t think he was trying to be overly macho about it, as some YT commenters suggest. I give him credit for remaining calm. I most definitely would have panicked.

Sure, maybe the guy was in line for a Darwin Award, but what’s one supposed to do with a giant plume of wind and rain and roof tops and lightning barreling towards him? Assume the guy didn’t have access to a basement (he was in a parking lot). Tornadoes travel faster than cars. You can’t outgun them, especially in an old Ford pickup. Sure you could say, “He should have driven away from it. He didn’t necessarily have to outgun the torndao to avoid it. He could have made a bee-line perpendicular to the tornado’s oncoming path.”

I seriously doubt it’s easy to predict a torndao’s path as it’s coming towards you. Go right, it could go right. Go left, it could go left.

Give the guy a break.
