New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks

When you outlaw big gulps

New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

Isn’t grotesque obesity garanteed in the American Consitution?

  2. McGee,

Why not just tax the bejesus out of them? People will still drink this stuff, they just might buy more than one drink. Tax it…make some money.

“And then we’ll use the tax money to pay for weight-loss programs for the morbidly obese!” -Government

Why ban if you can tax?

The fat tax. Way more American than the fat ban.

  5. pvc,

In other news, NYC banksters and hedge fundsters are still free to fatten themselves as much as they like on other people’s money.

  6. ange,

its kinda like blaming a burger for the person eating it gaining weight or having health issues, or blaming a gun for the dude who uses it to shoot kittens with.

  7. Joey Chickenskin,

In a sense it does tax having that amount of the drink. You now need to buy two.

People won’t because they don’t need two because they never needed that huge drink, so they will buy a smaller one, take in less calories and be that little bit healthier.

It will be funny to watch soft drinks companies push ‘personal freedon’ to respond to their aggressive promotion of physically damaging products.

It’s strange that it doesn’t extend to milkshakes but it may be that profit margins on milk based products keep a lid on enormous drink sizes.

  8. Miss Poppy,

So there’s a wrong – big food pushing crap on the American people. Instead of going after big food we go after its victims. We the People f*** over other People and feel like we’re doing something constructive. And we get to feel morally superior to all the fatties out there.

Bulls*** laws like this make us feast politically on each other when we should be eating the rich.

  9. JoeJoe,

How is 0,47 liters of coffee a “medium” size???

And “going after people” is bulls**t. Nobody will carry two or three cups at once, so there is an immediate effect in practice. And there is no person in the world that could say that giant amounts of high-fructose sugar is good for you.

  11. Debbe,

There was this failed experiment in the 1920s called Prohibition, which aimed to stop alcohol consumption, and we’ve ALL read how well THAT worked. Besides, if large drinks are outlawed, only outlaws will have large drinks. I think. ;-)
