  1. Bacopa,

The fight scene between between Vader and Kenobi in Star Wars:ANH was based on the Japanese Kendo style of fencing because Alec Guinness had experience with that style. It actually worked quite well as kendo often results in lots of crossed blades and dramatic shoving. One thing they never did was turn their backs on each other. ESB and ROTJ mostly followed kendo rules too.

Of course, given that lightsabers ignore armor and cause horrible wounds on contact, I think epee style where you turn sideways to extend reach and reduce your body contour would be more realistic. Some say epee is unrealistic as hits to the toes of the right foot are legal. Lightsabers would make this realistic as a hit to the toes would burn off most of a foot.

    • Jeff,

What style (if any) do the fights in the newer movies fall under? What do they get closest to looking like? Is it a bunch of styles mushed together with theatrical and excessive showmanship?

    • FlamingAtheist,

I think in ROTJ Luke slipped into Saber style. LUKE SMASH! (Sorry, father in-law is and epee fencer and instructor so we make fun of saber fencers frequently for their, um, lack of grace)
