Woo hoo. Got the rest of my seeds in today from Landreth. It’s about time to start some of them inside.

  1. Ninabi,

When living in colder climates, holding those new seed packets was like holding a promise of warm weather to come.

Enjoy all the gardening- can’t wait to see pictures of all that you are growing.

  3. FlamingAtheist,

I’ve picked up some herb seeds for containers and a few flower seeds and bulbs. Need to get ordering a few starts and plot out where stuff is going to go. So ready for things to warm up.

  4. Bacopa,

Kinda funny seeing those seeds. Down here carrots, radishes, and kale are winter crops that you would normally have planted in October and harvested by now. And those tomatoes had better be in the ground NOW and well on their way. Tomato plants seldom survive the late summer heat and insect onslaught.

  5. Angry Sam,

When do you start your various seeds going? The roommates and I are talking about doing same, although I’ve only used starts for tomatoes.

    • This weekend is about 8 weeks from the last avg frost. I’ll start the tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, and eggplants.

The only thing I’m capable of growing is my disdain for politicians and tourists.

  8. Tyler,

Very little grew for us well last year (in Seattle) – we had a cool summer. Kale was the big winner, so we’ll be planting that again. This is a good reminder to get seeds going now.

    • Bacopa,

Nothing grew here last year because of a winter drought followed by a summer drought and 109F temps. And this is in a city with a higher average rainfall than Seattle. Luckily we’ve had a normally wet winter. There were few oranges this winter, but the new blossoms are out in strength and the winter loquats are ripe thanks to the rain.

I can’t imagine growing kale in the summer. I can’t imagine not having fresh greens all winter. I lived for a few years up north. They said of tomatoes “knee high by the 4th of July”. What? Tomatoes are done for by mid-July. The few survivors must be harvested green before some bug eats them. Ever hear of fried green tomatoes?

Only hot peppers and Okra yield in late summer. Lots of okra, more okra than you can imagine.
