Question of the Day

How are you doing?

No, seriously. How are you? I’m exhausted. You can see this reflected in how little I’ve posted lately. I can’t even gather the energy to post a Caption This. And I’m just posting those. MacCrocodile and Dale do the heavy lifting on those.

So regular commenters and lurkers alike. How are you?

  1. gruggach,

I’m doing pretty good, thanks for asking. I have lots of fun things to look forward to this weekend. I’m a regular ray of frickin’ sunshine today.

Hope you get your energy back soon.

That reminds me of the article on sarcasm that I meant to post earlier..

Exhausted sums it up well too (not physically, but in that “I can’t bear to even read the news today” kind of way, if that makes sense).

Otherwise, fine I suppose. Thanks for asking!

  4. Stephen,

Thanks Chris. Pretty fed up, long term unemployed, have no money, back living with the parents(ugh). Really need a job. Owe money. Tough to sleep and equally tough to get out of bed. On the plus side it’s been a warm November, my beard is coming along nicely and I’m currently enjoying Skyrim. At least I have good eyes, teeth and I’m not homeless or starving!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

    • Sorry to hear that Stephen. I was unemployed for a long time at one point. I remembered hearing how when they tabulate unemployment statistics, they don’t count those who have given up looking for work. I didn’t understand how anybody could give up looking for work when they had no job. After months of being unemployed, I finally got it. It starts wearing you down after a while. It starts to feel hopeless.

      It isn’t though.

  6. MacCrocodile,

You seem to have good timing with these questions. Last time you asked, the rumor was that I hadn’t gotten the job I’d interviewed for. Today, the rumor is that today is my last day at this temp job, but the boss still hasn’t said anything to me about it (much in the same way he didn’t tell me about the job until the last minute, by email). I should go to lunch now, but after I get back, I really need to just corner him in his office and ask him point blank about what I’ve heard.

When I was a kid my parents remedied that with booze. Seriously – they told me that when I was a baby, if I was crying and they couldn’t shut me up my Dad would rub a little whiskey on my gums and I’d be out for the night. I can’t say it was good parenting, but it worked. Also, it was the 60s, man.

I went through your site (linked from your name) and really liked Chatter. I agree with Chris though, artistic motivation comes in waves so as soon as you’re done in your current state of mind you’ll find your voice again. Looking at big coffee table art books always helped me a lot.

Anyway, the shoe paintings are new this year, and have received the most interest, so I’m determined to keep chugging along.

I have too many art projects going on right now. And I have to do all the design/print/extra work for my dad’s suprise 60th coming up. Plus I need to sift through my art for finished pieces and redo my website gallery with only those, and paint a new piece based on a drawing, and start a new series to develop one cohesive style. I’m not sure where I’m going with my artwork – just kinda lost right now.

Conflicted. Appreciative to have a job but disappointed that I am stuck being high level help desk support despite the organization being changed so we had a contract help desk. But when they need help I get the call. Specifically wanted to not do help desk work anymore (or crawl under desks pulling cable) but I still do.
Appreciative for fall though, and days of use-or-lose vacation ahead to recharge myself mentally and hopefully re-energized for my job. And appreciative for fall/winter seasonal beer releases, hello Imperial Stouts and Dark Porters!

Mixed feelings. On the down side, today is the last day of an 8-day vacation (my last one this year) and I go back at 4:00 tomorrow morning. But after reading some of the other responses, I’m grateful that I have a job to go back to, even if it is in a grocery store. On the upside, no nagging wife, no bratty kids, and I’m enjoying building a kick-ass kitty condo for my cats. I’m probably enjoying it more than my cats will appreciate it, but I’ll also have more fun watching them use it more than they will.

Chris – as for the lack of energy thing – do you ever take those 5-hour energy shots? They’re an awesome remedy for the mid-day slump. I keep one in my night stand. When the alarm comes on I take a single swig from one (about a third of a bottle). It helps me wake up, and by the time I get out of the shower I’m feeling great. Well, as great as one can feel at 3:15 a.m.

The job itself is great (despite the lack of health insurance, union protection, and salary). I’m good at it, I enjoy it, and the kids like me. It’s just the darn evening classes that are driving me nuts. I really don’t need them right now, and I’ll be ecstatic when, in two weeks, I don’t have to worry about them anymore.

I am feeling oddly reflective. It was a strange week for me. I worked long days all week and spent a lot of time in the morgue. I had to be a dispassionate witness to some terrible things done to children; it is something that I am accustomed to but still occasionally struck by. I come away from it both saddened and yet grateful for the years that I have managed to live and hopefully have left to live. I think I will take a little more sweetness from a night in a warm pub with friends tonight and a lazy afternoon with coffee, a fire in the fireplace and Hitchen’s latest on Sunday. Thanks for asking!

On top of all this, my best friend of 20 years was just diagnosed with a brain tumor.

  39. d,

Well, the building next to mine is getting construction done, so my windowless cave of an office has stunk of sewage for a month. My dream engineering job is a bit of a nightmare since 90% of what I now do is horrible paperwork and seemingly endless meetings. I have to pretend to have a sunshine personality at work, and I’m actually a horrendous bitch, so this is really wearing on me. My bosses all disagree with each other, and rather than working out their vision together, it’s up to me to somehow satisfy all of them. My condo is a mess; and because of the super thin walls, I’ve been up for all the midnight and 3 am feedings with my neighbors’ infant. I’ve been dating the same dude for 7 years, and i don’t know if i love him or hate him, and he feels the same way- sometimes, he’s all “we should get married” and sometimes he’s all “I’m glad we have separate houses.” All of my stupid friends are getting married, and if I have to go dress shopping/buy one more stupid bridesmaid dress, I sweartogod I’m going to start shooting. And, just in time for me to host my first Thanksgiving, my jackass sisters are winding up the drama factory. My parents are in the process of retiring far away, and while I enjoy that they are a few hours away now, when they move, I will be at least a 12 hour drive from my nearest relative, and I’m panicking.

Thanks for asking, Chris. It feels good to dump all that out, I haven’t had a good bitch for a while. I hope your exhaustion goes away, soon. I’m doing pretty well. I’m getting over a nasty cold. I have next week off. We’re celebrating my wife’s 40th tonight with friends and family (at P.F. Changs… Not my choice). I have a new job with new responsibilities that actually had me in a meeting last week with the lieutenant governor of my state. It has been a difficult adjustment, but my team is now heading in the right direction. My commute sucks, but I’m getting acquainted with “books on tape”, which is new for me. Right now, I’m reading/listening to the entire Sherlock Holmes catalog during my commute. Halfway through Reamde with real old school book reading. Getting used to 2 new sister kittens and am really enjoying my year with a foreign exchange daughter from Kosovo!

That is the bare bones truth of it. That is how I am doing.

I have a flexible schedule (which means I work all the time) and make more money than I ever did at a “real” job. My children are growing up to be good people. I have a man I love. I have a home I love. I really have nothing to complain about.

  51. Just tired, mostly. Not enough time and not enough money.

  52. Piri,

Today I went to a funeral and a birthday party. Mixed feelings.

  53. DreamDevil,

Tired… the darkness here in Scandinavia can be unbearable at times and my neuropathy is getting worse every year.

But atleast I have Skyrim and Uncharted 3 to keep me company. :D

  55. EV,

Also tired. I have a cold I can’t shake and the evenings are getting darker earlier in the UK which makes me want to hibernate. Nothing much happening, just work and apathy for stuff that is more exciting than work.

  58. Ninabi,

Borrowing from George Carlin- I won’t say “Fine!” but will use, per his advice, the phrase “moderately neato”. I miss him and his way with words.

Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that one of my kids was beaten, robbed, hospitalized without insurance and lost his job because, well, he was in the hospital. Flew out to bring him home to recover and rebuild his life, starting with every piece of ID that was stolen as well. Good times.

But- there are bright spots in life as well. I wanted to tell you Chris, thank you for writing awhile back about the Beatles show in Las Vegas. I had a chance to go out there last week and got to see that show. And it blew me away- it was better than anything else I’ve seen in Vegas. Any time you want to post Las Vegas information, I’m always happy to read about it.

  59. I’m doing ok, thanks.

My job is stretching me (in a good way) and I’m learning a lot about myself and how I lead a team, which is new to me. It was painful and stressful, but I’ve grown into it. So that’s good.

My son is handicapped (mentally and physically) and won’t have after-school daycare starting next year (he’s going to be 12, therefore officially in “high school” though he barely knows his ABCs), meaning we’ll either have to drop to one salary and cut our income in half or pay someone a ridiculous amount of money to be available to baby-sit him every weekday from 3:30 to 5, when my wife comes in. Also we must find such a person.

Also, adapting our house to put a wheelchair elevator in front is going to cost us around $24,000. So that’s not so good.

    So you know… ok. :)

    • Dale,

Sorry to hear about the care situation for your son. My wife teaches at Gateway Education, a school here in Greensboro, NC, that offers educational care for children up to age 21 years with severe and profound disabilities. It’s a huge, huge help for many families in the region. There is an incredible need for many more schools like this.

Good luck with your son. He’s fortunate in that is sounds as though you’re doing all you can for him.

    • Ninabi,

Is there a way to contact other parents of children who go to school with your son and see if there is a stay at home parent willing to make a bit of extra money? Do you have a college nearby? A student majoring in special education might be available for a reasonable amount of money.

I’m sorry you are in this situation- it seems funding is cut right and left.

Don’t lose hope- there is somebody out there- I watched an SEH teen before and after school for a modest amount of money when I was at home when my kids were small.

      • Sebastien,

Thanks for the kind words, Dale and Ninabi: Indeed, the reassuring part of all that is that my son is happy. :)

  60. Barbwire,

Incredibly busy with my volunteer job as Homeowners Assn. president. Secretary resigned from stress, treasurer is in New York to be with her mother during an experimental treatment for cancer, VP who says she’s too busy with her other organizations, one total prima donna complaining that I described her actions in the minutes, therefore making her look bad, trying to get out Annual Disclosures, babysitting two dogs of very different sizes who don’t know each other, and fixing Thanksgiving dinner for the family. But thankful for friends who do help and that I am healthy enough at 70 to do all this. Really thankful that I’ve been able to dump the perfectionism and accept myself as I am. Glad to have this great blog to visit.
