Last time I read White Teeth, I was eighteen. I should re-read it. Did you enjoy it, Chris?

I traded a book to read with a friend. I had her read Cat’s Cradle and she assigned me White Teeth. I wasn’t disappointed. Although I think she has still yet to complete her part of the bargain. Harumph.

How many hours a day would you estimate that you spend reading? Is there a set block at a certain time of day during which you always read, or is it sporadic?

Sometimes on the train, sometimes at lunch, always right before bed.

I picked up White Teeth after my wife read me opening paragraph, but the next 50 pages bored me to tears and I put it down. Is it worth powering through?

If you had to pick three books off your reading list to recommend, which ones would they be?

The Serpent and the Rainbow is the one about Haiti and voodoo? If that’s it, I couldn’t finish it–it really scared me.

I read “With the Old Breed” by E.B. Sledge. It was excellent. I also highly recommend “Helmet for a Pillow” by Robert Leckie. Both books were the main sources for HBO’s Pacific follow up to Band of Brothers. While I think Sledge is a better writer and the more troubled of the two; Lecklie’s account of the battle for Guadalcanal is staggering.

Sorry correction: “Helmet For My Pillow”
I also applaud you on your attempt at Atla’s Shrugged. I couldn’t make it past 50 or so pages.

You read Cryptonomicon in two weeks? Big ups man. I think I took a month and a half. I can see some Vonnegut up there too. You’re a man of good taste.

“The Mysterious Affair at Styles” : Was this your first go at the estimable M. Poirot? Not a bad place to start. If you haven’t read it yet, may I suggest “10 Little Indians”. Not Poirot but probably Dame Agatha’s best wrought Whodunnit.

Just finished the new Harry Dresden novel, Ghost Story by Jim Butcher, and give it a high recommendation. Though if you’ve not picked up Dresden before I’d at least recommend that you read the prior book in the series, Changes, first, as Ghost Story picks up on the previous book’s cliffhanger.
