  1. Mike, depends on the element and the purity. You’d be amazed what I can order for my classes from regular science supply catalogs (good thing the politicians don’t know about some of these). Where I teach, we have a 3 pound brick of sodium kept in kerosene in a glass container, which is nested within two metal containers that both lock, kept inside a sealed chemical storage locker. It’s terribly unsafe stuff to keep around, but the cost of having it recycled is astronomical, no one wants to deal with the stuff. So we keep it and use it once a year for demonstrations outside in large puddles. For many students, its the only part of the class they ever remember!
