Ben Stein Responds To IMF Chief’s Arrest By Blaming The Alleged Victim

From Think Progress:

Conservative economic guru and former Nixon and Ford speechwriter Ben Stein took up the disgraced IMF chief’s case in a column in the American Spectator. Stein wrote, “What do we know about the complainant besides that she is a hotel maid?” After expressing confidence in her character — “I am sure she is a fine woman” — he proceeded to suggest exactly the opposite:

On the other hand, I have had hotel maids that were complete lunatics, stealing airline tickets from me, stealing money from me, throwing away important papers, stealing medications from me. How do we know that this woman’s word was good enough to put Mr. Strauss-Kahn straight into a horrific jail?

Stein also sharply questioned the maid’s allegation, insinuating that she was a willing partner and suggesting that someone can only really be sexually assaulted if a gun or knife is involved:

The prosecutors say that Mr. Strauss-Kahn “forced” the complainant to have oral and other sex with him. How? Did he have a gun? Did he have a knife? He’s a short fat old man. They were in a hotel with people passing by the room constantly, if it’s anything like the many hotels I am in. How did he intimidate her in that situation? And if he was so intimidating, why did she immediately feel un-intimidated enough to alert the authorities as to her story?

  1. I think the story sounds fishy, too. Perhaps it’s true, but for now they are allegations; one person’s word against another. They both need to be waterboarded to sort out the facts.

  2. It’s not rape if he didn’t use a weapon. It can’t be rape if she didn’t immediately report it to the police, or if people in the hallway didn’t hear it. The hotel maids are stealing my money and medication.

Stein sounds more like a malignant and un-funny Abe Simpson with every day that passes.

  3. While it seems pretty likely that he did it, I still feel that there is room for some doubt. Nonetheless, the way Stein expresses this is vile and idiotic.

  4. From, the War and Peace Report:

Jeffrey Shapiro, attorney for alleged victim: “She’s a 32-year-old woman who comes from Guinea, who came to the United States approximately seven years ago with her daughter. The daughter is now 15 years old. She’s a single mother. She’s the sole support of herself and her daughter. She’s alone in this country. She was not allowed much of an education in her home country, came here, you know, under difficult circumstances, but managed to develop a trade in becoming a house keeper, was very grateful to have that job, worked at this particular hotel for approximately three years and was very happy for the fact that she lived in this country and she could provide a life for herself and her daughter.”

  5. Stein is a complete asshole. This is the guy who was in love with wall street (still is) before the housing meltdown and was seen on a talk show (pre meltdown) berating someone that was saying the housing market was in trouble. I hope I don’t get so out touch with reality as he has in his old age! Oh, and he’s a creationist and make a movie about it. Can this idiot just go away now?

  6. I could tell he hated women when I used to watch his game show, but this is really awful. I can’t think of another crime where the victim is so routinely blamed or accused of lying other than rape. I just don’t understand.

  7. This is classic Ben Stain-on-humanity. COmfort the comfortable, afflict the afflicted. If this asshole is innocent he will recover quickly & easily with lots of friends to sooth him. The maid, truthful or not, will suffer either way as the wealthy and well-connected like Benny close ranks to protect one of their own.

I don’t know if the maid knew this or not but this guy has a history of this sort of thing. He has paid hush money & wrecked lives in the past after being accused of rape.

  8. Valid questions, because these things are sometimes fraudulent (think of the Duke Lacrosse team). But as Dido said, “Nonetheless, the way Stein expresses this is vile and idiotic.”

  9. I am sure he is a _fine_ man, but there are some inconsistencies. He says the hotel maids stole from him, but is it really stealing if they didn’t break in? How do we know he didn´t leave these items out with little notes telling them to take them? Why is he first complaining now?

  10. When your job consists of figuratively raping the lower class around the world, why not go ahead and literally rape them too?
