Japan’s Strict Building Codes Saved Lives

From the NY Times:

Hidden inside the skeletons of high-rise towers, extra steel bracing, giant rubber pads and embedded hydraulic shock absorbers make modern Japanese buildings among the sturdiest in the world during a major earthquake. And all along the Japanese coast, tsunami warning signs, towering seawalls, and well-marked escape routes offer some protection from walls of water.

These precautions, along with earthquake and tsunami drills that are routine for every Japanese citizen, show why Japan is the best-prepared country in the world for the twin disasters of earthquake and tsunami — practices that undoubtedly saved lives, though the final death toll is unknown.

In Japan, where earthquakes are far more common than they are in the United States, the building codes have long been much more stringent on specific matters like how much a building may sway during a quake.

Calvin discusses his body modifications:

all I’m really going to have to say about this.
a tonnnn of websites have been posting my pictures and talking a lot of shit about me and how I have terrible parents, need my ass beat, they hate me, etc…

I’m trying not to let any of this get to me, but I spend a fair amount of time on the B9 and they seem to really dislike me. You’re all much too quick to judge and it pisses me off. You don’t know me, and I don’t have shitty parents. I don’t care if you don’t like my ears, or piercings. That’s your problem.

The swastika matter. I’m not a supremacist. It was used and still is a sign of peace in eastern cultures. It was used as a right wing symbol for maybe 5 years.

That’s your problem if you don’t think I’m edge. I’ve gone over this before but just read this post.

As for me not being competent enough to decide what I should do with my body. I do think I’m old enough to make rational descisions. If I regret it later, oh well. It’s not like modification is permenant. I can just get my ears sewn. Don’t think I’ll regret it, and I plan to do a shit load of other stuff with my body.
