Sarasota Detective Fired for Trying to Secede From U.S.

From the Herald Tribune:

SARASOTA – Last April, a veteran Sarasota Police homicide detective went to the courthouse and tried to secede from the United States of America.

The detective, Tom Laughlin, filed a convoluted document declaring himself a “sovereign citizen.” The filing included a thumb print on each page and a photocopy of 21 silver pieces — the price to become a “freeman.”

In doing so, Laughlin, 42, joined a small but growing group of U.S. citizens who claim they are not subject to federal law, that they no longer have to pay taxes and that their homes are their embassies.

Last week, he was fired for it.

Wisconsin: Assembly Passes Budget Repair Bill

From TodaysTMJ4:

MADISON – To Republican Assembly members, it was time. From Democrats to their counterparts, it was “Shame! Shame! Shame! Shame!”

As Republicans walked out of the State Assembly chambers early Friday morning following the passage of Governor Scott Walker’s budget repair bill that – among many other provisions – would strip most public workers of many of their collective bargaining rights, the repeated screams of “Shame!” were the words screamed by orange-shirted Democratic counterparts.

It was very dramatic. Pandemonium. Chaos inside the state assembly.

After more than 60 hours of debate and 86 proposed amendments, Republicans said it was time to vote.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m., after more than 60 hours of debate on this, the Republicans quickly called for the vote, which ended all debate.

Some of the Democrats were so taken aback by what had happened, they didn’t get a chance to vote.

The vote happened so fast, within seconds, that the bill pass with Republican voting for it, but while they were voting, Democrats kept yelling, “No! No! You can’t do this!”

Republicans kept on voting, and within seconds, the bill had passed 51-17.

Job Seekers Being Told ‘If You’re Unemployed, Don’t Apply’

This happened at a Sacramento job fair:

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A Sacramento job fair highlighted an unexpected challenge for some unemployed people hoping to get back into the workforce. Many of those unemployed are being ‘if you don’t have a job, don’t bother applying’.

Workers with no jobs who have plenty of experience and education flocked to a job fair Wednesday that advertised employers were looking to fill 700 jobs. Nearly 2,000 people showed up to the fair.

But some of the unemployed job seekers say they are facing a new challenge as some companies aren’t even considering applicants who are currently unemployed. Some companies have even gone as far as posting signs, stating you must have a job just to fill out an application.
