GOP Congressman Resigns

Ouch. Another score for the party of “family values.”

Rep. Chris Lee, R-N.Y., resigned from Congress after a report emerged that he had sent flirtatious e-mails, including one with a bare-chested photo of himself, to a woman he met on Craigslist.

Lee is married and has a child.

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness,” Lee said in a statement Wednesday night.

“The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately.”

On Wednesday, the gossip website Gawker posted a story that included the e-mails allegedly exchanged between Lee and the unnamed woman. According to the story, a single 34-year old woman from Maryland posted an ad on Craigslist’s “Women for Men” section on Jan. 14. Soon afterwards a man named Christopher Lee replied, identifying himself as a 39-year-old divorced lobbyist.

When Lee wasn’t busy trolling Craiglist for adulterous relationships, he was trying to redefine rape and against repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

  1. Chris, this kind of posts really hurts. I do feel pain when i’m reading news about sex scandals abroad (US or uk, usually). Are you aware that our prime minister is being charged with wiretapping and photographs about sex orgies with girls under 18 and all he needs to say about this scandal is “i’m not a saint, judges are trying to subvert democracy, i will not resign”?
If you like you can read here

and take thousands of tons of material to post you’ll fill the blog for years…

  2. I wholly support laughing at and shaming Republicans, but the the term “sex scandal” is overused, childish, and seemingly inapplicable for this situation. The “scandal” is that a married male photographed his bare upper body and showed the photo to a female that wasn’t his wife. He’s a hypocrite and his political accomplishments have been loathsome, but a man being bored with his marriage is not an interesting story. In fact, it’s insipid tabloid gossip (hence why it was posted by Gawker) that accomplishes nothing. Yes, this story has caused a dumb Republican to resign, but he will be replaced by another dumb Republican.

Fuck this guy, buy not because of this trivial shit. Also, fuck Gawker.

  3. It’s gotten so all I have to do is sing “another one’s bit the dust”, and my SO starts laughing and asks “which republican?”
