Wow, Just Wow of the Day

A writer finds her work being used without permission by a magazine and writes the editor for an explanation and gets this as a response:

But honestly Monica, the web is considered “public domain” and you should be happy we just didn’t “lift” your whole article and put someone else’s name on it! It happens a lot, clearly more than you are aware of, especially on college campuses, and the workplace. If you took offence and are unhappy, I am sorry, but you as a professional should know that the article we used written by you was in very bad need of editing, and is much better now than was originally. Now it will work well for your portfolio.

The entire letter and reaction to it is here.

The Magazine is Crooks Cooks Source Magazine which will probably have to take down their facebook page very soon.

  1. Unfortunately, this is just a reflection of the general attitude towards intellectual property that is an unintended result of the Internet being a constant presence in our lives. Folks just think that if they can click on it they can use it, and if they can use it then why not sell it? I hope the backlash from this wakes a few people up, though.

  2. It’s sad, because her original article is basically just her using other people’s work to make 14th century & 16th century apple pies…but scratching out any parts of the recipes she either couldn’t find, or didn’t feel like researching too much, so that she could use modern ingredients and make modern apple pies instead..

    1. I’m confused as to why you’re sad. Those recipes are old enough that they’re not under copyright, and she includes a lengthy bibliography. Or do you just mean that you thought it was a crappy article?

  3. And he’s even asking for compensation for having ‘improved’ the article.
Is this from the same guy who stomps women on the head and asks for an apology afterwards?

  4. Their website is now down and there is confirmation that Cooks Source is losing advertisers. The story also made the Washington Post. The internet is a harsh mistress…

  5. the facebook is fun to watch – WOW. It’s about time there was a shit storm on someone like this. Creatives everywhere are loving this!

  6. Oh, the posts on their wall are a riot!
