The Unemployed Stigma

From CNN:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The last thing someone who is unemployed needs to be told is that they shouldn’t even apply for the limited number of job openings that are available. But some companies and recruiters are doing just that.

Employment experts say they believe companies are increasingly interested only in applicants who already have a job.

“I think it is more prevalent than it used to be,” said Rich Thompson, vice president of learning and performance for Adecco Group North America, the world’s largest staffing firm. “I don’t have hard numbers, but three out of the last four conversations I’ve had about openings, this requirement was brought up.”

Some job postings include restrictions such as “unemployed candidates will not be considered” or “must be currently employed.” Those explicit limitations have occasionally been removed from listings when an employer or recruiter is questioned by the media though.

  1. Reminds me of a comedy movie where a recruiter was turning down a candidate saying “Your profile is fine, but you know, we’re not fond of that ‘job-seeker’ aspect…” “Uh, I wouldn’t be looking for a job if I already had one.”
It seemed absurd in the film and I didn’t think that happened in real life.

  2. This is really just basic human psychology at work. Another great example is how men who already have girlfriends/wives are more desirable to other women.

  3. Was that movie a french movie? I think it was called “the three brothers”
Because if not, then that movie had that exact same scenario.

  4. i can believe it, seems almost impossible nowadays to get a job in the most menial of fields. Unbelievable what the screening process is just for a cashier job at effin Target.

  5. I see an opportunity here. If I could start a multi-national and multi-disciplined corporation, with employees that are independent contractors, who pay me for the privilege of having a “job”, I can act surprised when their prospective “new” employers call for a reference. It would be just like Amway, except it more legit.

  6. Sort of weird and like that girlfriend/wife analogy, if you look for work you could get fired, if you look/flirt with other girls you will be fired.
