From Wikipedia:
Banana ketchup or banana sauce is a popular Filipino condiment made from mashed banana, sugar, vinegar, and spices. It is often colored red to resemble tomato ketchup. Banana Ketchup was made when there was a shortage of tomato ketchup during the World War II, due to high production of bananas.

of course you can put it on ice cream… I don’t know if you would want to eat it… but, be my guest, slather it on!

I’m half Filipino and I do not like banana ketchup. It’s super ubiquitous though, and during my last visit to the Philippines I was unaware of this. I asked for ketchup and as I dipped my fries or whatever it was in it, I was insulted by this charlatan in tomato’s clothing!
Real ketchup and I have a sacred bond of which I shall never make a mockery!

I will be calling my Filipino sister-in-law today to discuss this. This sounds like something that I must try at least once.

I found this in Puerto Rico and thought it was delicious. They don’t dye it red and there is no added sugar, just banana pulp, viinegar, garlic, onion, salt, and spices.
