New Basketball League Open to Whites Only

From Think Progress:

A new professional basketball league called the All-American Basketball Alliance (AABA) sent out a press release on Sunday saying that it intends to start its inaugural season in June, with teams in 12 U.S. cities. However, the AABA is different from other sports leagues because only players who are “natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league.” AABA commissioner Don “Moose” Lewis insists that he’s not racist, but he just wants to get away from the “street-ball” played by “people of color” and back to “fundamental basketball.” Lewis cited the recent incidents of bad behavior by NBA players, implying that such actions would never happen with white players:

“There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing,” he said. “I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.” […]

  1. (What? My first comment didn’t show up, but someone else’s comment did? Was my comment offensive enough to moderate-out?)

Even if this was totally legal, I suppose they could draw an analogy to the split in men’s vs women’s basketball leagues. The problem with that is that men and women’s leagues are split because men are more athletic. Would this league suggest that black men are more athletic than white men? I don’t think that would be the kind of message they’d want to promote.

  2. Let them go for it, as long as they don’t use any taxpayer money to support themselves (like building stadiums, etc). Then, tax the crap out of them and use all the taxes to fund after-school programs targeting “people of color” who play “street ball.”

  3. @ TF2 – you are sadly mistaken if you think women are less “athletic” than men. There are plenty of women athletic enough to play any sport with men, and some of them much better at certain sports than males. Unfortunately, they been prohibited from doing so by the male leagues sexist regulations. Take away those prohibitions, give it ten years, and then come back here and tell me who is “athletic”. If you’d do any reading about this at all, then you might find out that as women progress from grade school into higher grades they are actively discouraged if not excluded from sports that are male dominated. There were actually some outstanding female baseball players that were forced to play in the black or as they were known in the day “negro” leagues, because the white males refused to allow them to play despite the fact that they were as good as or better than most of the male players. Try reading “The Frailty Myth” and educating yourself with some facts, and then you can spew something other than the typical male drivel.
Summarily excluding anyone be that for the color of their skin, or because they may or may not have a piece of meat dangling between their thighs is wrong, but certainly excluding women from exclusive male leagues is precedence for what these people are doing with regards to skin color.
I think as long as they do not accept any public funding or expect some city to build them a stadium with tax payer money they’ll be just fine. Unlike men who can still to this day exclude tax paying, hard working women from sports they are perfectly capable of participating in that are funded with just as much female earnings as any man’s. Talk about taxation without representation!

    1. Bwahahaa! Holy shit, someone actually just used that masterwork of risible sophistry known as “The Frailty Myth” in the service of exhorting a person they’re arguing with to “educate themselves with some facts first”!? Wow. Astonishing. How embarrassing for you.

This is the book, for those who haven’t had the distinct displeasure of reading it themselves, that literally, straight-facedly makes the claim that things such as the sexual dimorphism of musculature observed in humans (and ohhh, nearly every other species of mammal on the planet) is actually not due to any biological reason, but rather is simply a result of girls being “kept conditioned to believe in their own weakness”; and that if this weren’t the case, it would be women who dominated the NFL rather than men.

Tell me, do you make commemorative Andrea Dworkin tchotchkies in your spare time to sell at your weekly local anti-patriarchy stitch ‘n bitch?

      1. You may be right about the ‘Frailty Myth’ – haven’t read it, don’t care to. But the exclusion of women from sports, or the segregation into women only leagues is ridiculous. It’s got little to do with physical prowess.

  4. Good for them, I fully support them in their endeavor so long as no public funds are provided to them. Just as there exist hundreds of groups that cater only to negroes, groups that cater to caucasians should be allowed to exist with the same acceptance and freedom the others do.

  5. The reasoning behind it (getting away from the “street-ball” played by “people of color” and back to “fundamental basketball.”) is definitely a racist, face-palm-worthy statement.

Still, I think any “whites-only” group is no better or worse than other group that doesn’t allow whites and/or men. White men are the only demographic that isn’t allowed to have any exclusivity.

    1. The reasoning behind it (getting away from the “street-ball” played by “people of color” and back to “fundamental basketball.”) is definitely a racist, face-palm-worthy statement.
No kidding! It’s wildly inaccurate, too, since one of the early pioneers of what this guy calls “street-ball style” was Bob Cousy, who is so white that his parents were French.

  6. Surely no one would take a “white only league” seriously !
    (what a cop-out…”because your white”)

Anyone can be good at basketball…practise, practise, practise

  7. Uh…good luck with that, AABA.
I’m a huge college basketball fan and thought the goal is that the best team wins. Rebounds, percentage of three point shots- this is the stuff I give a shit about. Not what the players look like. Just how good they are.

Bunch of people worried their little precious ones don’t get a turn on the court? Cry me a river. I’m sure everybody on their league will get participation ribbons and trophies for all at the end of the year banquet. And they will all still suck.

    1. Man, I hope it’s a hoax or a joke, but I know people like this. They are 100% sincere; they don’t think they’re racist. It’s the same ol’ fuckin’ thing. Insecure white guys, who feel nostalgic for the “good old days”.

These assholes need to be mocked and marginalized.

  8. Given that there is no such thing as a “white race” , and the entire concept is purely a social construct, it would be huge fun to get any one of these racist jerks to prove that they are “white” or Caucasian. I like how they throw in ‘native born” as well. Morons

How Biology Refutes Our Racial Myths
Excerpted from The Race Myth: Why We Pretend Race Exists in America

Celera used DNA extracted from five volunteers, three women and two men, who were ethnically African American, Chinese American, Hispanic, and European American. Their results showed that at the DNA level you could clearly tell the females from the males (due to the genetic differences in the X and Y chromosomes), but you could not identify the race of the individual from the DNA.

The Celera study only confirmed at the molecular level something population geneticists and physical anthropologists had recognized for well over fifty years: the nonexistence of biological races in the human species.

    much more here …

  9. If there is no such thing as race than how can these people be racist?
Race is very clearly a social construct, not a biological one, though it’s aspects are often biological, such as skin colour. The study you quote above it completely irrelevant, nobody is going to wake up and cast aside their socially derived racism or territorial angst because scientists say everyone’s DNA is essentially the same. There is no myth, there are races. You could argue we are all one in a philosophical sense, or in a biological sense, or even in a social sense by tracing us all back to our origins, but this holds no sway except perhaps on a personal level if you choose to be so enlightened.

    1. “nobody is going to wake up and cast aside their socially derived racism or territorial angst because scientists say everyone’s DNA is essentially the same.”

Yes that is true. I totally agree with this. However many, many racists DO believe that there ARE legitimate scientific basis for the notion of different “races” with “innate” and “naturally born” characteristics. It is thus upon the research of scientists that we should use to dispel this myth of human beings being separated into “different races”. This makes the study that Jeff quote very relevant. That is sociologically and scientifically wrong. It is not about being “politically correct”. Rather it’s about acknowledging what is true and a fact.

That said, it is also counter-productive to dismiss the significance of skin colour today. Racism exists because people continue to accord significance to this one biological aspect of the human being. In order to counter this, we should all be made aware on how much more we are in common with one another than it is commonly thought about. There are no different “races” then. It is a start to know that while people across the globe have much cultural differences, the very essence remains that we are human beings. I think this is a very important step considering how acts of genocide often begin by painting the Other as subhuman and animal-like (think Hitler and the Jews, the Hutus and Tutsis, Turks and Armenian etc.)

  10. This has probably happened:

WHITE GUY: “Hello, sir. I see from your skin color that you are African-American. I’ll express my respect by referring to you as such.”
NON-WHITE GUY: “No, actually, I’m a citizen of Haiti. I’m neither African nor American. Please don’t make assumptions based solely on my skin color.”
WHITE GUY: “Cut me some slack. How else can I tell? I can only be sure if someone isn’t African-American if they have white skin, like that guy over there.”

THAT GUY OVER THERE: Me? no, I’m an American citizen, but I was born and raised in Africa. I’m an African-American. Please don’t make assumptions based solely on my skin color.

  11. When they had a commercial on TV for the negro colleges that was great when they said”Don’t waste a blacks mind.” Well I think if they want and all white basket ball team, go for it ! The blacks have enough groups with only black people in them so now its our turn, and it is not racist just because they are chosing the members they want.
