British woman arrested in Dubai for ‘illegal sexual intercourse’ after being raped

From the Telegraph:

The woman, a Muslim of Pakistani descent, was celebrating her engagement to her 44-year-old boyfriend, and was allegedly attacked when she passed out in a hotel lavatory.

Despite approaching police about the attack, she was arrested after admitting to “illegal drinking” outside licensed premises as well as having sexual intercourse outside marriage. Her fiancé was also charged with the same offences.

The couple from London are now reportedly on bail and understood to be awaiting trial after having their passports confiscated. Should they be found guilty, they could face up to six years in jail.

The woman, who is said to have accepted her boyfriend’s marriage proposal during a three-day break, admitted drinking too much alcohol as they celebrated at Dubai Marina’s Address Hotel. The waiter is then said to have followed her into the toilets and raped her while she was in a state of semi-consciousness.

After her fiancé found out about the attack, they contacted police, but they were questioned about breaking the country’s strict rules, which contain elements of Sharia law.

She was then made to give a blood test to prove she had been drinking, and only was given access to proper medical checks following an appeal from the British embassy, it is claimed.

  1. An stupidly illogical, harsh stance in my opinion. Might pass this on to my friends, they’re thinking of going there to teach English soon, looks like they’ll have to brush up on the local law. At least they’re married! Six years in jail, insane. Just have to watch the boozing and raping waiters I suppose

  2. Honestly I’m most surprised that there’s legal drinking in Dubai and that women still willingly go there. Seen way too many stories of women being treated like sub-humans (hell, it seems that most people treat animals better) to be too surprised at this.

  3. Not surprising given that you can go to prison for bouncing a cheque in Dubai.

At the beginning of the recession, a bunch of people whom had bought property in Dubai ended up in prison (they don’t have bankruptcy laws anything like in the US) I read that there were something like 3000 cars sitting at the Airport after people fled the country.

However, ignorance of the law is no excuse. Go there and respect the laws there, just as if someone moves here from the Middle East and wants to have 6 wives.

    1. “However, ignorance of the law is no excuse. Go there and respect the laws there, just as if someone moves here from the Middle East and wants to have 6 wives.”

That’s stupid. Extreme moral relativism died a long time ago, as it should have.

Maybe other cultures can have differing opinions about the best food for breakfast, whether you take off your shoes indoors, and whether a beret is a fashion faux pas. However, sensitivity to those differences should clearly end somewhere far before “Well, if they want to rape their women, who are we to criticize?”

  4. Go on holiday to Dubai?
    Thought experiment:

If you had a time machine, would you go on holiday to:

    1. Nazi Germany (FU Godwin, dumbass),
    2. Stalin’s Russia
    3. Pol Pot’s Cambodia
    4. Idi Amin’s Uganda.

If you did, with the excuse “It’s just a holiday”, and you ended up
in a gulag/camp/dictator’s bowels, don’t come crying to me for
sympathy. You’re fuelling an economy that’s particularly evil, and
forgive me if I conserve my reserves of sympathy for those
members of the species who can’t afford to take ludicrous
    holidays in odious, tyrannical hell-holes.

  5. Dermotmoconnor, it does feel good to blame the victim, doesn’t it? You’re so much smarter – something like this could never happen to you.

  6. I guess in retrospect, it’s a bad idea to enter a backwards country and break their religious laws and then tell on yourself. Who would have guessed?

    1. Being able to guess that a result is possible is quite a bit different from being culpable for that result.

You realize you’re giving the exact same argument why every couple who has sex has morally lost their right to get an abortion, don’t you?

    2. “I guess in retrospect, it’s a bad idea to enter a backwards country and get raped and then expect the criminal to be brought to justice. Who would have guessed?”

There, I fixed it for you.

  7. Why would anyone go to this country any more? Especially a woman! – This religious justification for such insanity has got to stop so people could realize how truly idiotic their laws are.
