    Possibly because safety is only one facet of speed limits. National speed limits were implemented by Nixon during the ’70s oil crisis. I’m sure they figured out pretty quickly how much of a cash cow it was to hand out speeding tickets. Like they’ll ever stop milking that one… (At least until we get the cool cars from I, Robot that do ~130mph in the city)

    In a similar vein, smoking kills, but damned if the government doesn’t make heaps of money from taxing it. If only they’d take the same attitude with marijuana. I’m not a smoker of either kind, but damned if I don’t find the whole war on drugs a hypocritical farce. Like the man said, “the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over again and expect different results.” Remember prohibition, Al Capone, etc?
