Remember the Story of the Teacher Who Burned a Cross on His Student’s Arm?

From NBC4i:

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio—A Central Ohio school board has approved a $121,000 settlement with the family of a student who said his teacher burned the image of a cross on his arm.

School board members in Mount Vernon agreed Wednesday night to resolve a federal lawsuit by paying $5,500 to the boy and his family and $115,500 to their lawyers.

Well, I’m very glad to see that the student is…. wait, what was that last sentence again?

  1. Wait, wait, wait. Don’t get bent out of shape yet, this is the suit the family brought against the school district. John Freshwater (the religious whacko teacher in question) is still personally a defendant in the suit.

*That’s* the more important of the two defendants. Also, his termination hearing is still on hiatus due to an issue of rules. (Apparently, he has the right to have the hearing decided while school is in session or something, I don’t recall the specifics.)

Richard B. Hoppe has been covering this story at The Panda’s Thumb.

  2. Holy crap. And I thought the whole lawsuit culture in USA was created by victims wanting to make big money but it looks more like it’s the lawyers who are behind it all.
    It seems even more absurd.

  3. Has anyone stop for a moment to think that the true victim in this case is the lawyer? How can s/he continue to get business from the wacky right? What’s is s/he gonna say to next client? That I won a case against God or Jesus?
