Quote of the Night

Pat Robertson on if Christians should study the Koran:

Kelly, it won’t be wrong if somebody studies Islam, but they need guided study, because somebody needs to go along and point out the incredible inconsistencies in that book. And if you have a guided study of the Koran and see how much in there is just repetitious, how much comes out of the Old Testament and the New Testament, how much is just plagiarism from the Bible, etc.?.

Question of the Day

What phrase do you hate?

I have two candidates.

It was meant to be. No, it wasn’t meant to be. It just be. You can say that anything was meant to be after it happened because that’s what happened!

At least he/she died doing what he/she loved. Personally, I’d like to do what I love without it being overshadowed by my impending demise.

Update:

I’m adding “It is what it is” to the list. Of course it is what it is. If it wasn’t what it was then it wouldn’t be what it is!

Elderly Woman To Get 40 Lashes for ‘Mingling’

Saudi Arabia, one of the most fucked up places on the whole damn planet.

A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a 75-year-old Syrian woman to 40 lashes, four months imprisonment and deportation from the kingdom for having two unrelated men in her house, according to local media reports.

According to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan, troubles for the woman, Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, began last year when a member of the religious police entered her house in the city of Al-Chamli and found her with two unrelated men, “Fahd” and “Hadian.”

Fahd told the policeman he had the right to be there, because Sawadi had breast-fed him as a baby and was therefore considered to be a son to her in Islam, according to Al-Watan. Fahd, 24, added that his friend Hadian was escorting him as he delivered bread for the elderly woman. The policeman then arrested both men.

Orson Welles Interview

The “Raiders” Story Conference

Mystery Man on film links to a 125 page pdf of a transcription of a 1978 story conference of Spielberg, Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan discussing Raiders of the Lost Ark.

L — Do you have a name for this person?

G — I do for our leader.

S — I hate this, but go ahead.

G — Indiana Smith. It has to be unique. It’s a character. Very Americana square. He was born in Indiana.

L — What does she call him? “Indy?”

G — That’s what I was thinking. Or “Jones.” Then people can call him “Jones.”

Daily Dose of Ingersoll

Now and then somebody examines, and in spite of all keeps his manhood, and has the courage to follow where his reason leads. Then the pious get together and repeat wise saws, and exchange knowing nods and most prophetic winks. The stupidly wise sit owl-like on the dead limbs of the tree of knowledge, and solemnly hoot. Wealth sneers, and fashion laughs, and respectability passes by on the other side, and scorn points with all her skinny fingers, and all the snakes of superstition writhe and hiss, and slander lends her tongue, and infamy her brand, and perjury her oath, and the law its power, and bigotry tortures, and the church kills.
