So Much for the Bailout

And the Dow is down about 550 at the moment.

House rejects bailout bill:

WASHINGTON — The House this morning defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue package, ignoring urgent pleas from President Bush and bipartisan congressional leaders to quickly bail out the staggering financial industry.

Stocks plummeted on Wall Street even before the 228-205 vote to reject the bill was announced on the House floor.

When the critical vote was tallied, too few members of the House were willing to support the unpopular measure with elections just five weeks away. Ample no votes came from both the Democratic and Republican sides of the aisle.

Bush and a host of leading congressional figures had implored the lawmakers to pass the legislation despite howls of protest from their constituents back home.

Update:

Wheeeeeeeeeeee. Dow drops 777.

Anathem

Done! It took me almost 3 weeks to read Anathem but I’m finally done. Was it worth it? Sure. Is it his best? No.

The first half of the book I found fascinating. I loved the idea of a monastic society worshiping theory instead of a deity and remaining mostly isolated from the rest of society that is evolving outside of the monastery’s walls. The first forty or so pages are not easy to get through since Stephenson is intent on you learning the vernacular that he created for this world. But if you make it that far, he eases up or perhaps I just had grown accustomed to the language which made for easier reading since I wasn’t going to the back of the book every other sentence.

The book does hit a dry spell in the middle and I found myself starting to skim somewhat through the last third of the story.

Overall, I’d give it a B. (First half was an A and the second half was a C+)

Now I need to read some short stories to cleanse my palate.
