Traditional Boxing in Nigeria

From BBC News:

Traditional boxing from northern Nigeria is fast, brutal, and has few rules.

The men who dedicate their lives to it are wanderers, itinerant labourers in search of fame, or the sons of boxers – born into the ring.

“Dembe”, as it is called in Hausa, is exceedingly dangerous. Serious injury, and even death, are a real risk.

  1. They stop when someone falls down…that’s more humane than most western fighting. In boxing, the one who falls down is encouraged to get back up and keep fighting. In MMA, the person who knocked them down keeps after them. Of course you’re risking death. Technically any punch could kill someone.
