I have nothing but the highest respect and admiration for the Tokyo train system – but even this fine system running like clockwork has its … all » limits. This video was taken in 1991 and things have improved somewhat due to increased trains and (more importantly) flex-time being allowed at many companies, but even now, when something throws the trains a little off scedule (someone taking the express checkout from life by jumping in front of a train, etc.), then things can be as shown in the video. 30,000,000 is a lot of work to move about!

yeah, I was in tokyo just this last February…wasn’t this bad, thank god.
Seoul is becoming like this though, but the stations couldn’t be fucked to hire people to stuff you in. pretty much every man for himself.

It COULD be like this in Chicago, but people have sense enough to wait for the next El train.
/At least, most people do. There’s always one or two who try to jam in when there’s almost always an empty train right behind.

I used to live in Japan in the 90′s, and once everyone was packed in, there was inevitably someone that would pass gas in the tightly packed car, or you would be stuck next to a person with terrible dental hygiene. good times! Loved japan but don’t miss the commuter trains.

In my experience it’s still not unlike the vid on some of the more popular stops during rush hour or the last train of the night. Personally, I’d rather miss the train and stay the night at a 24 hour cafe/karaoke bar/McD’s than deal with that mess for more than a short ride.
