It has always amazed me that people who decry communism because the Soviets had to stand in line to get free food, will stand in line to get free food.

The difference is that you don’t starve if the government doesn’t fork over the free food, since the government lets you keep enough of your paycheck to support a retail food industry.
In this case people were standing in line for a good deal. In the USSR, it was the ONLY deal.
