Christians vs. Witch School

Weird. Christians are usually tolerable of other ideas and religions.

In a town that sometimes feels closer to the Bible Belt than to the city, churches had been holding weekly prayer sessions for months in hopes of driving the outsiders away. They also had erected a billboard denouncing Wiccan beliefs, proclaiming, “Worship the Creator not Creation.”

Fueling their sense of urgency was a ball held by the Wiccans last weekend to celebrate Samhain, their new year’s festival, which falls on Halloween.

As more than 150 people filed into the shuttered high school Wednesday night for the meeting, Andy Thomas, youth minister at the Rossville Church of Christ, said residents had a spiritual responsibility to drive the witches out. If they didn’t, he said, young people were in danger of being pulled off the Christian path.

“Rossville has fallen on hard times,” Thomas said. “The school closed. This is a popular place for meth. We’re like, ‘Great, now a witch school.’ It feels like we’re being attacked.”

The Great Pumpkin House

Every halloween season, the house at 748 Beech Street in Kenova, West Virginia is transformed into the Great Pumpkin House. The owner, Ric Griffith and hundreds of other volunteers carve thousands of pumpkins for display at his home every halloween.

This year (2006) they plan on having 3,030 pumpkins on display. The pumpkins will be on display between October 28th – November 4th. The display will be featured on the Ellen Degeneres show early next week.

Dear Colorado Rockies, God Hates You

Perhaps you should try praying to the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

DENVER — The fan wearing a Colorado Rockies cap walked outside Coors Field on Sunday afternoon, not saying a word, but simply holding a sign: “HAVE FAITH.”

The Rockies, who entered Sunday trailing the Boston Red Sox 3-0, may have nothing but faith, refusing to believe their first World Series would end with an embarrassing four-game sweep.

“I think God is the reason we got this far,” Rockies reliever Matt Herges said. “We’ve done some amazing things this year (that are) hard to know. Something is going on. I think we may be getting favors from God.

“It’s not like the Red Sox are going against God. I’m sure they have Christians over there. But we realize what a blessing this is.”

Patriots vs. Washington

Did anybody else notice the shameful touchdown in garbage time during the Patriots vs. Redskins game on Sunday? Going for a touchdown at the end just to avoid a shutout is a low class move Joe Gibbs.

Daily Dose of Ingersoll

RobertGIngersoll.jpg

During all these years it was claimed by the theologians that their God was governing the world, that he was infinitely powerful, wise and good — and that the “powers” of the earth were “ordained” by him. During all these years the church was the enemy of progress. It hated all physicians and told the people to rely on prayer, amulets and relics. It persecuted the astronomers and geologists, denounced them as infidels and atheists, as enemies of the human race. It poisoned the fountains of learning and insisted that teachers should distort the facts in nature to the end that they might harmonize with the “inspired” book. During all these years the church misdirected the energies of man, and when it reached the zenith of its power, darkness fell upon the world.

In all nations and in all ages, religion has failed. The gods have never interfered. Nature has produced and destroyed without mercy and without hatred. She has cared no more for man than for the leaves of the forest, no more for nations than for hills of ants, cared nothing for right or wrong, for life or death, for pain or joy.

Man through his intelligence must protect himself. He gets no help from any other world. The church has always claimed and still claims that it is the only reforming power, that it makes men honest, virtuous and merciful, that it prevents violence and war, and that without its influence the race would return to barbarism.

Nothing can exceed the absurdity of these claims. If we wish to improve the condition of mankind — if we wish for nobler men and women we must develop the brain, we must encourage thought and investigation. We must convince the world that credulity is a vice, — that there is no virtue in believing without, or against evidence, and that the really honest man is true to himself. We must fill the world with intellectual light. We must applaud mental courage. We must educate the children, rescue them from ignorance and crime. School-houses are the real temples, and teachers are the true priests. We must supply the wants of the mind, satisfy the hunger of the brain. The people should be familiar with the great poets, with the tragedies of AEschylus, the dramas of Shakespeare, with the poetry of Homer and Virgil. Shakespeare should be taught in every school, found in every house.
