Home-made Helicopter

KANO (AFP) — Mubarak Muhammad Abdullahi, a 24-year-old physics undergraduate in northern Nigeria, takes old cars and motorbikes to pieces in the back yard at home and builds his own helicopters from the parts.

“It took me eight months to build this one,” he said, sweat pouring from his forehead as he filled the radiator of the banana yellow four-seater which he now parks in the grounds of his university.

The chopper, which has flown briefly on six occasions, is made from scrap aluminium that Abdullahi bought with the money he makes from computer and mobile phone repairs, and a donation from his father, who teaches at Kano’s Bayero university.

The Collyer Brothers

From Wikipedia:

Homer Lusk Collyer (November 6, 1881 – March 21, 1947) and Langley Collyer (October 3, 1885 – March 1947) were two American brothers who became famous because of their snobbish nature, filth in their homes, and compulsive hoarding.

The brothers are often cited as an example of compulsive hoarding associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as disposophobia or Collyer brothers syndrome, a fear of throwing anything away. For decades, neighborhood rumors swirled around the rarely-seen, unemployed men and their home at 2078 Fifth Avenue (at the corner of 128th Street), in Manhattan, where they obsessively collected newspapers, books, furniture, musical instruments, and many other items, with booby-traps set up in corridors and doorways to protect against intruders.

Both were eventually found dead in the Harlem brownstone where they had lived as hermits, surrounded by over 100 tons of rubbish that they had amassed over several decades.

Not-So-Horrible Thing Happens In Iraq

Fox News or The Onion?

BAGHDAD—In a development that Pentagon officials are calling not nearly as horrifying as usual, three car bombs ripped through a Baghdad marketplace Tuesday, killing fewer than 15 innocent civilians, severely injuring no more than 30, and merely maiming one U.S. soldier.

The car bombs, which were detonated by Iraqi insurgents at approximately 2 p.m., left slightly less than complete and utter devastation in their wake. As of press time, barely five families were believed to be trapped beneath the resulting wreckage, although upbeat U.S. authorities have estimated that number could be as low as four.

“Not bad—not bad at all,” said Lt. Col. Michael Donnelly, who claimed the attack is conclusive proof that the tide in Iraq is somewhat turning in a vaguely less-ghastly direction. “This is hardly the parade of death and destruction we’ve grown accustomed to. In fact, I’ve recently received word that our injured soldier isn’t even going to lose his other leg.”

Eye Tattooing

From BizarreMag.com:

Yes, the eyeball tattoo. People really are getting their peepers tattooed in more or less the same way that you would get any other part of your body inked.

Along with two of his friends, Pauly Unstoppable and Josh, Shannon Larratt, founder and owner of body-modification website Bmezine.com, had the procedure done about four weeks ago. Although Shannon is heavily modified and said it wasn’t “a big deal”, he did concede to feeling a little trepidation: “I’d much rather a bunch of people had done it before me, but what choice do I have?”

Shannon says they adopted “a really simple, lo-tech approach” to the procedure. His eye was held open, using a forefinger and thumb, as the pigment, which is the exact same type you would use in a regular tattoo, was injected into his eyeball.

“We injected pigment under the top layer of the eye using a syringe, which, to the best of my knowledge, has never been done before, either medically or cosmetically.”

Although that sounds rather dangerous, Shannon is adamant it isn’t: “The eye is very resilient; you can put almost anything in it. Your eye actually is designed to be able to handle contaminants being there.”

7-Year Old Suspended For Drawing a Picture of a Water Pistol

From MSNBC:

DENNIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A New Jersey second-grader’s drawing of a stick figure shooting a gun has earned him a one-day school suspension.

Seven-year-old Kyle Walker’s mom told an The Press newspaper of Atlantic City that her son was suspended for violating the district’s zero-tolerance policy on guns. She said her son told her he’d drawn a water pistol.

Kyle gave the picture to another child on the school bus, and that child’s parents complained about it to school officials.
