Follow Huckabee’s Money

The American Taliban hearts Huckabee.

I read in Robert Novak’s column this morning that Mike Huckabee held a fundraiser earlier this week at the Houston home of Dr. Steven Hotze. As Novak notes, Hotze is “a leader in the highly conservative Christian Reconstruction movement.”

Christian Reconstructionists, for those unfamiliar with the term, are Religious Right radicals who believe that America, and the rest of the world besides, should be governed in accordance with strict Biblical law. And yes, that includes stoning adulterers.

Last Statements of Inmates Executed in Texas

I’ve excerpted one from Charles Nealy who was executed on March 20, 2007 but there are hundreds more here:

Ya’ll know I love you, you too Ward. You have been a good friend. You are a good investigator. Doug, I thank you for coming from Michigan. Chris and David, I love you. Thank them for their support Doug. Debra, James, I’m not crying so you don’t cry. Don’t be sad for me. I’m going to be with God, Allah, and Momma. I’m gonna ask dad why didn’t give you away at your wedding. Randy Greer, my little brother, I’ll be watching you, stay out of trouble. All my nieces and nephews, I love you all. Sammie, Vincent, and Yolanda, I will be watching over you all.

The reason it took them so long is because they couldn’t find a vein. You know how I hate needles – I used to stay in the Doctor’s Office. Tell the guys on Death Row that I’m not wearing a diaper. I can’t think of anything else. You all stay strong. Now you can put this all aside. Don’t bury me in the prison cemetery. Bury me right beside momma. Don’t bury me to the left of dad, bury me on the right side of mom.

Kim Schaeffer, you are a evil woman. You broke the law. The judges and courts helped you and you didn’t have all the facts. When you look at the video, you know you can’t see anyone. You overplayed your hand looking for something against me and to cover it up the State is killing me. I’m not mad or bitter though. I’m sad that you are stuck here and have to go through all of this. I am going somewhere better. My time is up. Let me get ready to make my transition. Doug, don’t forget Marcy.

Hoover Planned Mass Jailing in 1950

From the NY Times:

A newly declassified document shows that J. Edgar Hoover, the longtime director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, had a plan to suspend habeas corpus and imprison some 12,000 Americans he suspected of disloyalty.

Hoover sent his plan to the White House on July 7, 1950, 12 days after the Korean War began. It envisioned putting suspect Americans in military prisons.

Hoover wanted President Harry S. Truman to proclaim the mass arrests necessary to “protect the country against treason, espionage and sabotage.” The F.B.I would “apprehend all individuals potentially dangerous” to national security, Hoover’s proposal said. The arrests would be carried out under “a master warrant attached to a list of names” provided by the bureau.

The names were part of an index that Hoover had been compiling for years. “The index now contains approximately twelve thousand individuals, of which approximately ninety-seven per cent are citizens of the United States,” he wrote.

“In order to make effective these apprehensions, the proclamation suspends the Writ of Habeas Corpus,” it said.

Ron Paul vs. Abraham Lincoln

From Talking Points Memo:

You may have heard that in his star-turn yesterday on Meet the Press, Ron Paul said that the American Civil War was a mistake (brought on by a power-hungry Abraham Lincoln) and came out for so-called ‘gradual emancipation’.

Now, there are so many things morally and historically wrong with what Paul’s saying here, a few of which my old grad school pal Ari Kelman explains here.

But I must say there’s something almost endearing about this unforced error in wingnut extremism. Did Paul give in to the heavy media pressure to come up with a clear position on slavery and the Civil War? What’s even funnier is that even in verb tense he talks about it as a live issue. “The way I’m advising that it should have been done,” he tells Russert.

Advising? For better or worse, isn’t the decision on whether to have the Civil War and emancipate the slaves pretty much moot as a public policy issue?

Huckabee Absurdity: “The Ten Commandments form the basis of most of our laws…”

Ed Brayton from ScienceBlogs says “Not even close”:

1. Thou shall have no other Gods before me.

Blatantly unconstitutional. The free exercise clause of the first amendment guarantees that we each have the right to follow any God and any religious belief system we wish.

2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.

Also unconstitutional on free exercise grounds. Americans can make any graven image they wish to make, and bow down to whatever god or idol they wish.

3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain

Unconstitutional on both freedom of religion and free speech grounds.

4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy

Again, unconstitutional on free exercise grounds.

Pray For France!

Why?

Once over 40% protestant, France is now over 30% atheist!

Rampant secularization has made the spiritual battleground in France difficult. Yet, God is on the move – working through His people and drawing in the French people – one soul at a time.

Did you know that for the past 7 years thousands of French people intercede for France during the 40 days preceding Lent?

Pray for France is your access point to join French believers during these 40 Days of Prayer.

So do you just say a Hail Mary or an Our Father everyday for 40 days and you’re done?

In addition to registering for the 40 days of Prayer, we encourage you to order the 2008 Prayer Guide….

This year, we are pleased to offer the guide for only $3.50. The guide is available in electronic form (PDF) or in hard copy

Ah, it’s a Pay to Pray scheme? Oh you rascally Xtians you!
