A while back, while digging through LA’s now closed Aaron’s Records, I ran across a Record from “Friendshipâ€, and I recognized the bassists name, “Abraham Laborielâ€. I remembered a buddy of mine telling me that Abe was a “sick bassistâ€, and at 99 cents, i couldn’t resist. So I bring my loot home, and pop it on my technics. The very first track I played is called “The Real Thingâ€. I was instantly floored. I couldn’t believe my ears. I was listening to a funked out version of Super Mario Brothers “Underworld†theme.

I think you’ll find that most folks in the music business (myself included) would refer to this as a “bite”. The composers at Nintendo either subconciously borrowed that riff or were influenced by it in some way. (in other words, the Nintendo staff bit the riff). And, that’s not to say that the jazz bass player didn’t borrow the idea (or took inspiration) from another source as well. The use of octave bass lines was familiarized in the biology of the disco song, so it’s really no surprise that this mid-70′s funk/jazz record had such an element. I would argue that the Nintendo song is far more complex in melody and modulation than the jazz track.
and by the way, the jazz record was produced by Lee Ritenour (blech! he is to guitar what Kenny G is to saxophone).

The chorus of Janet Jackson “together again” is a rip off of one of the levels of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Megadrive II (I can’t find any samples, arrrgh!). I mean exact, note-for-note rip off. Revenge?
